“There is hardship in everything except eating pancakes.” Charles Spurgeon
Virginia’s blueberry buttermilk pancakes (yum!)
Shrove Tuesday is here, and that means?
Lent starts tomorrow. Ashes, fasting, 40 days ‘til Easter…
But today, also called “Fat Tuesday,” it is okay to whoop it up with yummy eats whether we are doing Mardi Gras in New Orleans, finishing Fasching in Germany, celebrating the last day of Carnival in Rio, or slushing our way through yet another dreary winter day.
For some reason lots of folks eat pancakes today. Years ago my church in D.C. always had pancake suppers on Shrove Tuesday, a tradition begun in medieval times to empty out rich ingredients before the onset of Lenten fasting. My church in Williamsburg is having a big pancake supper tonight, but I am serving up blueberry pancakes here at home.
Virginia knows she is supposed to give up sugar for various health reasons. But today it’s one last pancake hurrah (along with finishing off her Valentines chocolate stash) before giving up sugar for Lent (and hopefully a long time thereafter.)
Speaking of pancakes…
“What’s the best pancake topping? More pancakes.” 🙂
“How do you make a pancake smile? Butter her up.” 🙂
Virginia’s blueberry pancakes (smiling!)
grace, peace & pancakes!
Virginia : )
p.s. Once again Virginia will attempt her post-a-day Lent gig with something inspirational, a photo, quote, song, book suggestion, or who knows what (she doesn’t know yet as these posts have yet to be written.) Many readers and friends come from myriad faith traditions, but I hope these Lenten posts will be conduits of understanding and hope. Welcome to all!
Charles Spurgeon is a genius. Rather than pancakes, I’m going with sweet cherry pielets and pomegranate [juice]/creme de cassis dreamsicle pielets. But hey, if pancakes must be had, perhaps I now know what’s for dinner. As for your upcoming Lenten feast of words, go! go! go!
Ooooooh, those cherry pielets sound so good! Must confess my blueberry pancake recipe is low sugar. They were one of my precious diabetic Papa’s favorites, with sugar-free syrup. Loaded with all those good-for-you blueberries, not such a stretch for me (but the chocolate cake later in the day, that was a MUCH BIGGER stretch!) Now I am OFF sugar! Lenten hugs, Tim! 🙂
Pancakes, especially blueberry ones, are now haunting me…in the best of all possible ways.
For some reason, Tim, blueberries make pancakes seem a little healthier with all those good antioxidants? 🤣🍒🥞🍒🤣
🙂 Love it! Just gained 3 pounds by reading your blog!! 😉
Thanks, Jeff. These pancakes are pretty tasty, must confess! I did not have trouble finishing that entire plate! Blessings! 🙂
We call it ‘Shrove Tuesday’.
Thanks, Susie, for the heads up. Hope that your Lenten season will be blessed with extra doses of grace, peace & love. 🙂
I wish for peace, but life is non stop lately.

😊
What a delectable treat! Enjoy and have a holy Lent period.
Oh GH, these are a treat. Haven’t made them much lately – they were one of my diabetic Papa’s favorites, served with sugar-free syrup. Hope that you are keeping WELL — blessings & (germ free) HUGS! 🙂
I am getting better. Yes, germ free is the word. I have to be careful with personal hygiene as in washing hands, not shaking hands as a measure of greeting people and be wary of those that cough or sneeze around me! You take care too!
Be safe, GH – big hugs! 🧼🤗🧼
🤗🤗our archbishop suspended mass alongside all religious groups events so as to contain covid 19. This is a good move as they stream masses and insulate every worshipper from potential risks.
Oh GH, I wish our bishop had your archbishop’s wisdom. Today we had one COVID-19 related death in James City County where I live (the 1st in our state) plus 10 confirmed cases (the highest # in Virginia.) Our county declared a state of emergency Friday, but the bishop sent out an email talking about Sunday obligations (!!!!!!!!!) only excusing those 60+ or with autoimmune diseases. INSANE when just about every institution has closed + our local & state govt has asked for cooperation to stop spread. 😱😡😱😡
I am sorry to hear Covid-19 is so near you. Pity that your bishop is stubborn. If you have Christ in your heart, the church is anywhere. Bishop should learn E streaming and protect the flock. Bishop sounds ignorant of how deadly Covid-19 can be. 🙏🙏🙏🧡❤🧡❤ God will not forsake those who are not in a brick or mortar church. Please avoid being in a large congregation. Church pews and holy water are breeding grounds for the virus as so many people touch it. Take care. I hope your bishop wakes up with wisdom and closes the churches.
Thankfully GH, God is good dispensing wisdom! Woke up this morning to an email from our church. Our bishop headed directives from our local county/city administrators – all our masses are suspended today onward to help stop spread of COVID-19. 🌟🙏🌟
Whoo hoo!! I am really glad that this is now resolved. God does indeed look over us all. Blessings and stay safe Virginia. No handshakes, no communal sharing of food and remember social distancing.
Funny opening quote. Those pancakes looks delish and yummy….just the perfect portion size. There’s no doubt you enjoyed yourself.
I had to double check Charles Spurgeon actually said that quote. I have piles of his books. His writings are usually much more serious, which makes this quote even funnier! Must confess I gobbled that whole plate of pancakes without blinking. They were VERY TASTY. No doubt, at all regarding the enjoyment factor! Blessings & hugs, Sunshine! 🙂
Those look so good!
Oh Nora, these pancakes were SO good! Loaded with blueberries, actually a low sugar recipe. I used to make them all the time for my diabetic Papa (served with sugar free syrup) – they were his favorites! Must confess I thoroughly enjoyed the whole plate! Blessings! 🙂
These look so good! Pancakes always taste better to me at night for some reason. 😀
These pancakes were quite tasty. Looking at them is a little tempting (since I gave up sweets for Lent!) Blessings, Michelle! 🥞🤗🥞
Sorry to miss this post on the 25th Virginia. Given that your plateful of pancakes looked so good, I was going to ask for the recipe? As it was we battered and tossed a traditional mix and enjoyed a pile of pancakes drizzled with lemon-juice and sugar, and topped off with ice-cream, fruit berries and clotted cream.
I think pancakes a much underrated food and quite versatile in as much that they underpin either a sweet or savoury topping, and/or can be filled with all sorts of delicious fillings and baked.
From your replies to comments, and much to my delight, I get the impression you indulged! And why not! Wonderful! You’ll need those additional calories to get you through Lent 😀
Hoping all is swell in the wonderful well of life. Enjoy a pleasant weekend. Take care 😀

Oh Dewin, your pancakes sound absolutely divine! So jealous about the clotted cream. Years ago when I lived in Washington, D.C., I often made high teas resplendent with scones and real clotted cream from Sutton Place Gourmet – the most amazing store. That cream made the scones so tasty!
These blueberry pancakes are actually a low-sugar recipe I made as a special treat for my diabetic papa. I used fat-free buttermilk, organic flour & lots of blueberries. Oh dear, now I’m hungry. ooops!
Blessings to you Dewin! 🍒🥞🤗🥞🍒
