#ADVENT: ROSES IN DECEMBER

Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Years ago in the 16th century, native peasant Juan Diego encountered a vision of Mary on a hill near his village in Mexico. Dressed in native attire Our Lady of Guadalupe spoke to him in his local language.

When the disbelieving Spanish bishop in Mexico City asked for a sign, Our Lady of Guadalupe provided out-of-season December roses for Juan Diego on the hilltop. As Juan opened his tunic carrying the roses to the bishop back in Mexico City, the image of Our Lady in native attire was imprinted on his clothing.

This led to millions of native Indians coming to faith in the Americas with the empowering message (revolutionary at that time to the Spanish colonizers) that God loves ALL people! A message that remains relevant for our times.

It may come as no surprise that Virginia is a huge rose groupie (note the name of this blog: Roses in the Rubble.) The fact that Our Lady of Guadalupe chose to chastise the Spanish bishop with December roses – something beautiful and fragrant – is something that makes this feast day all the more meaningful.

“This is the irrational season
When love blooms bright and wild.
Had Mary been filled with reason
There’d have been no room for the child.”

Madeleine L’Engle (from Glimpses of Grace)

In this irrational season, may we honor Mary by letting the love of Christ bloom bright in our hearts – like roses in December!

#ADVENT: Conduits of God’s Grandeur

A part of Advent is opening our hearts and lives to God’s presence, to God’s glory.

Amidst challenges the extent of God’s grandeur may be shrouded in mists of confusion and doubt. But, God’s glory – like God’s love – doesn’t change.

“The Glory of God is a human being fully alive.”  St. Irenaeus

One part of being “fully alive” is being open to the grandeur of God’s heavenly paintbrushes at work outside us and inside us.

“People travel to wonder at the height of the mountains, at the huge waves of the seas, at the long course of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motion of the stars, and yet they pass by themselves without wondering.” Saint Augustine

This Advent are we open to God’s grandeur? Are we letting God’s giftedness in us shine for others to see? Or, have we hidden our gifts under bushels of fear and feelings of inadequacies? Maybe it’s time to take the angels’ “Fear not” message seriously.

An Advent task for today: exert a bit of courage and do (at least) one thing to glorify God.

“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine…”

Here’s to courageously letting the Light of Christ shine in and through us…

#ADVENT: HUMAN RIGHTS FOR ALL!!

It seems appropriate somehow that Human Rights Day falls during Advent. Over the years I’ve posted a Human Rights Day blog on December 10th not connecting it to Advent, but this year it dawned on me they go hand in hand.

“…And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8

Human Rights Day 2020 commemorates the establishment of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 when a war weary world said, “Never again!” The basic premise of the Declaration is that human rights are for all people – not just some.

Just like the love of God is for ALL people, not just some.

The Declaration of Human Rights proclaims “the inalienable rights which everyone is inherently entitled to as a human being — regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.”

(You can click here – UN.ORG/EN/UDHRBOOK – to read a really cool illustrated version of the Declaration on the U.N. website.)

We often think of the lack of human rights in faraway places, but there are many issues to consider close to home. Life is a gift, but for many crushed by injustice, inequality, and lack of access to basic rights, it’s a struggle to survive.

In this season of Advent look around and think about Who came as Love Incarnate into a war weary world 2,000+ years ago. The world needed the love of Jesus then, just as our whacked out world needs even more of His love now. Infused with His love, Jesus calls us today to be salt, light, and peacemakers…

“Keep your eyes on the Prince of Peace, the One Who doesn’t cling to His divine power; the One Who refuses to turn stones into bread and rule with great power… the One Who touches the lame, the crippled, and the blind, the One Who speaks words of forgiveness and encouragement… Keep your eyes on Him Who becomes poor with the poor, weak with the weak. He is the source of all peace.”  Henri Nouwen

#ADVENT: Tolkien Tireditis Cures

‘Tis the season for sniffles and general tireditis… Throw 2020 into the mix – voila! – it’s easy to succumb to blahs this holiday. Add uncertainty of an impending New Year (please, God, not another one like 2020!) and we may face an even more serious case of tireditis blues (when it’s hard getting motivated to move, like out of bed.)

But Virginia has a cure to recommend, something that has helped her in times past:

J.R.R. TOLKIEN’s “THE LORD OF THE RINGSand “The Hobbit!”

I have read these books once a year every year since the 8th Grade. That was many years ago, that means many times. Some years I read them more than once, especially in Africa where reading them helped during tummy troubles.

Calvin & Hobbes also helped, but laughing kind of hurts when your rear tushi is very sore during long nights of Montezuma’s Revenge. Add major bouts of all-night nausea (when all your insides spill outside) and tummy also gets a bit sore.

Combine BOTH at the SAME TIME, and you have fun times in the overseas life of Virginia (the person, not the state.) I know, I know – T.M.I.!!!

Back to pleasant holiday reading, I usually start “The Lord of the Rings” before Christmas and finish by New Years (listening to holiday music sets the mood.) During this year’s reading, I’m currently in the middle of “The Two Towers” nearing one of my favorite parts of the story when Ents make an appearance. Actually, I have many favorite parts, but I do love the Ents!

There are many opportunities to stretch imagination muscles in Tolkien’s uniquely inspiring world of Middle Earth. How does this cure tireditis blues? Well, Frodo and Company have a Tough Time of it with lots of overwhelming Doom and Gloom to face.

Yet they carry on, and on. Not without loss, but they keep on going.

Hobbits are my kind of folks. They like to eat 6 meals a day (whenever possible), love going to parties and enjoy good times. They also have fierce hearts and stout courage when it matters. Their monsters are much bigger than they are, but they fight anyway.

Perhaps 2020 monsters are digging tentacles in your holiday cheer.

Maybe you don’t have Hobbits, Ents, Elves, Dwarves, Gandalf, Aragorn, and the Riders of Rohan to help you. But, if you look around, you might find family and friends to help you with your battles.

Mayhap you don’t have a Golden Ring that must be destroyed to save the world, but maybe there are some things that need casting into the Forever Fire to get a fresh start in the New Year.

Fears gotta go if you want to move on to New Things: CAST THEM INTO THE FIRE!

Poof. That’s kind of wimpy, you may need a Gollum push to let go: POOF!

Watch your fingers…

“Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”  J.R.R. #ADVENT: COURAGEOUS FAITH

Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary…” (Luke 1:30)

Sometimes the opposite of faith is not doubt, but fear.

Mary had to face a daunting list of Big Fears:

What would Joseph think? Stoning her to death was an option…

What would others think? Reputation, ridicule, retribution…

What would change do to her? Her comfortable life, her family, her future…

How could she face the unknown? Not knowing?

Yet, Mary chose to say “no!” to her fears and “yes” to God.

“Yes” to hope, trusting God’s mercy and grace.

That’s courageous faith.

Be not afraid…grace, peace & courageous faith

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple.”  Psalm 27:1&4

#ADVENT: BLOOMS IN THE DESERT

“The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom…and rejoice with joy and singing…They shall see the glory of the Lord, the majesty of our God. …Strengthen weak hands, and make firm feeble knees. Say to those who are of a fearful heart, “Be strong, do not fear!” (Isaiah 35:1-4)

In some ways 2020 seems like a wasteland, a desert of aloneness amidst quarantines and global challenges. Now December has come and, while there’s hope with a vaccine on the horizon, things still look bleak with COVID infections skyrocketing in the U.S.

Let’s face it, Christmas this year may look completely different from years past. Devoid of parties, concerts, and town gatherings we anticipate with excitement, this holiday season may seem a tad dry and dreary.

Many of you still can’t go to church, either. (We go very carefully here with masks, tickets, social distance seating, and a scouring crew after each service.)

But, here’s the thing. The love of Jesus hasn’t changed. His love will still bloom in the deserts of our hearts, if we ask. The more we pray, strengthening His presence in our lives, the brighter the blooms – no matter how desolate things seem.

“But I repeat, do not fear: Jesus is with you, and you are with Him! In darkness, tribulation, anxiety of spirit, Jesus is with you… I assure you that Jesus is holding you more tightly than ever to His divine heart.” Padre Pio (Saint Pio of Pietrelcina)

#ADVENT: HOPE FILLED VALLEYS

“A voice cries out: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill brought low; the crooked places shall be made straight, and the rough places smooth. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed…” (Isaiah 40:3-5)

In the Scripture readings today we hear the voice of Isaiah who foretold the coming of Jesus, our Messiah. During Advent we’re meant to peek inside our hearts and give God a chance to straighten and smooth what has become off-kilter and broken in our lives.

Often we let insidious negative voices drag us into valleys of fear, while mountains of pride impede what Jesus wants to do in our hearts.

God – our Creator and Heavenly Father – calls us each “BELOVED.” We are precious in His sight. God wants to fill our valleys of fear with hope and peace. God wants to mend our broken hearts with love, the healing kind that lasts forever. Our Heavenly Father wants to unkink what’s twisting us in knots with extra doses of divine grace.

God wants to make the crooked in us straight, to open up more room for Jesus. Are we like the Bethlehem innkeeper – are the rooms in the inns of our hearts so crowded with our baggage there’s no room for Jesus?  Or, will we let God open our hearts to the new things Christ wants to do in us?

“We need Advent to remember what’s what and what’s not. The “off-stage” voice of the One Who is to come is what will get things straight, will fill in the empty valleys and level our mountains of defensive fear. To allow this, we trust the call, the unusual, the new of Jesus’ coming. We need these Advent moments to check out our little heart-hands and see if there is any room in those hands for our receiving the new Surprise.”  Fr. Larry Gillick S.J.

#ADVENT: Peace and Love Conspiracies

“Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.” Hamilton Wright Mabi

On this Advent Saturday, Virginia would like to instigate conspiracies of love and PEACE. With so many conspiracy theories gadding about, wouldn’t it be grand if we could all do our bits this year to engage in conspiracies of love and peace?

Especially now when the world could use LOTS of both?

#ADVENT ILLUMINATION

During this season holiday lights brighten up our surroundings. As we see the lights, why not take a moment to contemplate what having light in the darkness really means?

Take a moment to turn off your lights – all of them (including smart phones, iPads, laptops and anything that glows.) Then turn on one light and see what a difference it makes.

Illumination. Light illuminates.

It also shows what’s smudged. Advent is a good time to empty out internal closets cluttered with fears that dilute the Light.

Advent is about letting the Light of Christ in – and out.

Light of Christ illuminate us … that we may be Your light in the night of this world.

#ADVENT: The Potter’s Divine Artistry

“Yet, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and You are our Potter; we are all the work of Your hand.” (Isaiah 64:8)

“It is not you who shape God; it is God who shapes you… If then you are the handiwork of God, await the Artist who does all things in due season. Offer the pottery of your heart, soft and tractable, and keep well the form in which the Artist has fashioned you. Let your clay be moist, lest you grow hard and lose the imprint of the Potter’s fingers.” Saint Irenaus
