Walking in the woods (of life) Thoreau style…

a walk in the woods, Newfoundland (2000)

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.  I did not wish to live what was not life, living is too dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary.  I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartanlike as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion.”     Henry David Thoreau (from Walden)

I remember first hearing this favorite quote while watching ‘Dead Poets Society’ in the theatre, then going back to see the movie again notebook in hand (actually three more times – what an amazing movie!)   When I was younger, it seemed like a good maxim – carpe diem and all that. I always thought God wanted us to have fun, ABUNDANTLY(!)  So ironic to end up as a relief & development worker in conflict zones (where ‘fun’ became dodging bullets, bombs, landmines and irritable colleagues…)

Still, although life IS difficult, I think sometimes the difficult times are when we really LIVE.  It’s not just about having fun abundantly in good times, but in the tough times realizing that fun is actually possible (not always easy … but possible.)

I spent some of the most amazing days of my life in refugee camps where sewage ran through the streets & people where shot (regularly.)  How was fun possible in the middle of that?  Laughter. It often transcends challenges & makes what’s on your plate a little lighter. I laughed so hard I cried with some of my buddies in the camps… of course, there were times we cried (buckets) for real.

Pranks also helped. My boss smoked LOTS, so we gave him an ashtray that coughed when used – seriously,  it went ‘aack, aaach, aack’, then we’d see smoke wafting toward our offices.  One of our team hid my passport for a day to see if I would enter a higher plane of hyper-activeness looking for it (her strategy worked amazingly well!)

So, whatever you’re facing – if life is mean at the moment – take a walk in the woods & take a few deep breaths. See if Thoreau’s ‘living deeply’ is possible. If that doesn’t work, read a funny book (Calvin & HObbes, Farside…) or watch ‘Yes Minister’ until you hear a few rumbles from your laughter chords…

Laugh… breathe deeply…. laugh again… breathe deliberately…

… YOU’RE ALIVE! …

Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s No Boundaries: globally-inspiring-grooves !!

Celebrating 45 years of making music, LBM continues to brighten up the globe with songs of peace, faith and perseverance fused with their native South African Zulu sounds.  You may remember Ladysmith Black Mambazo from Paul Simon’s Graceland (an outstanding CD); they’ve been around a long time.

As an LBM groupie, I have a bunch of their CDs & thoroughly enjoy their acappella music that transports Africa to wherever the boombox (car player, itouch) is booming… but their “No Boundaries” collaboration with the English Chamber Orchestra is an absolute FAVORITE (of many favorites!)

Commissioned by the ICMF (International Classical Music Festival) of South Africa, Isak Roux arranged 12 songs that blend LBM’s isicathamiya sound with classical European orchestral music. The result: a compilation that plays beautifully over and over and over and over (again…)

LBM African favorites like Homeless, Jabulani – Rejoice, Awu Wemadoda, a tap-your-toes version of Umzuzu Nayi Ujesu and others stand out with new orchestra sounds, while classic choral works like Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus and Schubert’s Sanctus come alive with new African sounds.

The whole CD is AWESOME, but my favorite song (as evidenced by high frequency rotations on various playlists) is the original Dona Nobis Pacem (Latin for ‘Lord Grant us Peace’) premiered on this collaboration. Give it a listen & you’ll be humming lots of Dona Nobis Pacem(s) followed by “sing it brother, sing it sister, sing it brother, sing it sister…singing Glory –  Hallelujah to the Lord…Glory – HALLELUJAH to the LORD!”

Truly a brilliant, inspirational effort, LBM’s “No Boundaries” is just that – global praise of the highest sort to the boundary-less God of ALL creation (pink, purple, blue, me & you!)

Daily Strength for Daily Needs…

“…Pray for us to the Lord thy God…that the Lord thy God may show us the way wherein we may walk, and the thing that we may do…”  (Jeremiah 42:2-3)

Roses in Ibillin (1993)

“SPEAK, Lord, for Thy servant heareth,

Speak peace to my anxious soul,

And help me to feel that all my ways

Are under Thy wise control;

That He who cares for the lily,

And heeds the sparrows’ fall,

Shall tenderly lead His loving child;

For He made and loveth all.”    (Anonymous)

“That which I see not, teach Thou me.”  (Job 34:32)

“O Father, hear! The way is dark, and I would fain discern what steps to take, unto which path to turn; Oh! make it clear.   (Christian Intelligencer)

Excerpts taken from Daily Strength for Daily Needs, a book by Mary W. Tileston comprised of quotes & scriptures meant to ‘strengthen the reader to perform duties and to bear the burdens of each day with courage.’

I’ve appreciated this hard-to-find devotional treasure for years, (my copy is quite tattered!), but Good News – the wonderful ‘community of volunteers’ has transcribed this classic into an e-format available for e-readers (like my Kindle) for FREE!

The Express: The Ernie Davis Story (what a story!!)

American Football season has started!  This week we set up our fall-into-winter football ‘shrine,’ complete with signed footballs, pictures, mugs & Terrible Towels (must wait until it’s colder to air the blankets & throws…)

In honor of this auspicious occasion (it looked there for awhile that we might not see much NFL football this year), last night we pulled out “The Express” DVD that I gave Papa awhile back.  What an inspirational story! We were impressed again with the courageous hearts of both Ernie Davis (Rob Brown) and Syracuse University head Coach Ben Schwartzwalder (Dennis Quaid) as they tackle so much more than football on & off the fields of the 1950s.

“21 straight lines five yards apart. That is a football field. But there are other lines you don’t see that run deeper and wider. All the way through the country, and aren’t part of any game…”

Papa waxed nostalgic as the movie begins in 1949 on the railroad tracks of Uniontown, PA (located 5 miles from Papa’s hometown of Greensburg just outside of Pittsburgh) where Ernie lived with his grandparents. Pops – his inspiring grandfather who works in the coalmines – encourages him in every way…

“By the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain… though it was not I, but the grace of God which is with me.” (I Corinthians 15:10)

Young Ernie stutters through these words at the dinner table that echo through the movie as he develops into who he is, by the grace of God: an incredibly gifted football player. Moving to Elmira, New York, he plays so well in high school that Notre Dame and many schools try to recruit him, but Coach Schwartzwalder brings along African-American football standout Jim Brown to successfully help his cause.  (“You’re fast, but Coach will make you faster. You’re good, but Coach will make you better…and if you tell him this, I will come down from Cleveland and wring your neck!”)

As Jim Brown lays it on Ernie, Pops challenges Schwartzwalder, “what kind of man are you? …My grandson will spend four years learning from you, so… what kind of man are you?”

Ernie heads to Syracuse, where it’s not easy being an African-American player during the 1950s Civil-Rights era  – even in the North – but especially when they play the University of Texas Longhorns in the 1959 Cotton Bowl National Championship (a nail-biting game!)

Two years later Ernie Davis became the first African American to receive the Heisman Trophy.  In his acceptance speech, he thanks Coach Schwartzwalder for ‘making me better, teaching me so many things, and for…being a good man.”

There’s so much more to this movie – overcoming adversity, discrimination, a snapshot of the challenges faced down by early African American football players – but my favorite part is how the team changes & how Coach Schwartzwalder changes. His half-time ‘pep talk’ during the Cotton Bowl lays it on the line: “this is not just about football. This is about making history…for ALL your teammates.”   There’s also a love interest, Sarah, and more to tug your heart strings as Ernie Davis signs on to play for the Cleveland Browns, but…you might need a hankie or two by the end.

There’s so much to take away (what kind of man or woman are you? the kind to sit by & let the status quo oppress others, or get up and do something about it?) just like with “Remember the Titans” – one of my all-time FAVORITE movies (a Football flick set in Virginia starring Denzel Washington that is also set quite high on Virginia – the person’s – high-frequency viewing monitor!) – “The Express” is quite outstanding.  Highly, highly recommend…(!!!)

If you want to learn more, the movie is based on the book, “Ernie Davis: The Elmira Express” by Robert C. Gallagher. This morning I was quite taken to see just what kind of man Coach Schwartzwalder really was  (during WWII as paratrooper Captain he was awarded a Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, 4 battle starts & a Presidential Unit Citation!)          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Schwartzwalder

Papa’s new Bed-Ski-Boots!!!

Papa 'bed-skiing' in his new booties!!!

Finding roses after the ‘rubble’ of Papa’s hospital stay has been real easy with these new ‘BED-SKI-boots’ – he is so excited(!) & we are so excited(!) & grateful to Kathy – the Physical Therapist at the Hospital- who organized these for him.  Even though he lives & sleeps on air-mattresses, my Papa suffers from ankle burns, constantly waking Mama up at night to move his ankles. But NOW, with these AMAZING new BED-SKI Booties, he sleeps all night with his ankles comfortably ensconced in softness all over! No more waking Mama up for ankle burns !! yippee…

(we called these booties ‘BED-SKI-BOOTs’ because it looks like Papa can go bed-skiing in them!)

The most fun part — they make him look hip & happening COOL!  : )

p.s. Papa is ‘officially’ clear of pneumonia in his lungs as per Nurse Anna today!  yaaaay!

ambulance chasers & encounters with medical ‘Roses’ – (the living, breathing kind!)

We are celebrating the Gift of Life around here after going through the recent rubble of medical emergencies & hospital stays for my bed-fast quadriplegic Papa. Each day we thank God for the Gift of Life, but this week our thanksgivings are ‘seriously serious!’  As Papa told the Home-Healthcare nurses, “I thought pneumonia would be my ticket Home – but I’m still HERE!”  We are glad, & gladder still when contemplating precious Roses encountered along the way…

After several home-visits from Dr. Cummings, (a most AMAZING medical Rose who has looked after Papa for YEARS with notched up-grace-filled expertise(!),  Papa’s fever skyrocketed, so we called 911 for an ambulance to zoom him to Hospital.

Four minutes later, the ambulance turned up – with an Ambulance Chaser tailgater.  Not your typical Ambulance Chaser, gentle-giant Milt Hines – the chaplain of our Hospital here in Williamsburg – has been a good friend of Papa’s for many years. As he drove along Route 5 to church Sunday last, he saw a flashing ambulance turn into our neighborhood, so he ‘chased’ it right into our driveway & in the door with the paramedics.  He prayed over them as they worked on Papa & then prayed with Mama as they put Papa on the gurney.

As the loaded ambulance zoomed away, I revved up my car (with Mama safely ensconced inside) & ambulance chased it all the way to the Emergency Room… where Milt somehow beat us & was already there in helpful mode facilitating & praying & facilitating..

wow.  Looking back on that frazzling week in hospital, there were piles of rubble (high fever, pneumonia in lungs, medical stresses…), but there were also so many Roses encountered along the way.  It wasn’t so much the ‘what’ – (although we’re grateful for with-it docs, nurses, meds, tests etc.) – it was the ‘how’… expertise delivered with such grace, gentleness and humor. We were SO blessed.

For example, late one night when Papa had issues of a messy personal nature, two of the night nurses – Terri & Jeanine – helped him so graciously at 1:00AM; a ½ hour later I ran to get them… and they were so glad that Papa was takin’ care of business. Not just glad – happy. (“relief feels good!!!”)  That may be TMI, but you get the picture: REALLY AMAZINGLY NICE NURSES.

So – a BIG THANK you to all in Sentara Williasmburg’s 3-North wing for such amazing care: Terri, Jeanine, Jennifer, Ebony, Billie, Shannon, Bianca, Andra, Kim, Kimberly, Kristen, Laurie… and to spunky Speech Pathologist Kim, Dietician Amy, Volunteer Simon (16 yrs old & at it for 4 yrs!), physical therapist Cathy, Dr. Dimattia & Dr. Ionescu & all the other wonderful amazing staff throughout the hospital.

Other thanksgiving blooms for my Papa came through our family ‘stepping up’… my sister Shere cancelled all her commitments (& birthday celebrations – altho we did find a big piece of chocolate cake in the cafeteria –  gobbled in her honor; it took several tries for a piece of cake to actually reach her upstairs), my sister Cindy took a week off from work & came up from NC… Dwight pitched in, Dean & Lynn came up with Jessey… Woody helped get Papa home… & Mark led the whole extended family on major prayer duty…

whew. God is good (ALL THE TIME!)  Since coming home Papa has struggled with fever & lung challenges, but now the Home-Health Care nurses have left the scent of their blooms all over our home.. (Amazing Anna, Sara, Brenda, PT Sarah, & speech therapist extraordinaire Erin…)  Today Papa is doing oh-so-much-better (thanks be to God!)  altho still weak & ‘wiped out’ (his words..) Hopefully his appointment/ visitor quarantine will be lifted SOON…

For all my FB friends & family friends who have been praying – THANK YOU!

grace, peace & medical mercies

p.s. wonder if Milt can provide a few ambulance chasing lessons at a cut rate??

Lord, pls save me – the surf down here is gettin’ rough…

Saint Peter jumped out of the boat and walked on the water to Jesus. All was fine until he looked down – there was NO GROUND, just deep sea all around. His faith step faltered & he started to sink, then cried out: Lord, please save me! Today I tried that walking on water faith thing, but the going got tough. So, like St. Peter I prayed…

Newfoundland Coast (summer, 2000)

Lord, Please Save Me

(the surf down here is gettin’ rough)

Waves of frustration crash on the shores of my anger

(nothing is going my way today)

shake – rattle – let go

Lord, please save me!!

Waves of self-doubt crash on the shores of my insecurities

(I am just a nothing nobody)

shake – rattle – look up

Lord, please save me!!

Waves of apathy crush my empathy for the suffering in this world

(there’s already too much on my plate)

shake – rattle – look around

Lord, please save me!!

Waves of fear crash on my courage muscles

(can’t, won’t, NOT, too scared to try)

shake – rattle – work them out

Lord, please save me!!

Waves of mold crash on the shores of my mildewed mind

(too much mindlessness, too little mind-filled-ness)

shake –rattle – be transformed

Lord, please save me!

Waves of helplessness crash on the shores of my abilities

(challenges are TOO BIG, I am TOO small)

shake – rattle – take a leap of faith

Lord, please save me!

Waves of doubt crash on the shores of my faith

(why now? why this? why ME?)

shake – rattle – believe

Lord, please save me!

Waves of love crash on the shores of my prickly heart

(what’s that soft knocking I hear?)

shake – rattle – open up

Lord, please save me!

Waves of joy crash on the shores of my sadness

(Beautiful Savior, come to save me!)

shake – rattle – be lifted up

Lord, please save me!

Waves of mercy wash the shores of my thirsty heart

(Holy Redeemer, forgive me!)

shake – rattle – receive

Lord, please save me!

OH LORD

– THE SURF DOWN HERE IS GETTIN’ ROUGH –

PLEASE SAVE ME!!

Virginia’s Note:  Two weeks ago during a bad day when NOTHING seemed to be going anywhere but down, down, down, I found this Newfoundland pic in a box of old photos. Looking at it I sat down later & wrote this sort-of-prayer-poem. It helped me feel better so I plotted to post it the following Sunday (given Gospel reading re: Peter jumping out of boat.) BUT –  the surf got a bit rough that morning when my very sick bed-fast quadriplegic Papa was zoomed by ambulance to Hospital & subsequently spent all week there for pneumonia.  After several all-day-&-all-nighters, the surf was a bit more than rough. So, I thank God that this simple prayer (repeated often during frenetic days in Africa & Kosovo & the Middle East) is still so powerful. Hey, it worked for Peter! I thank God for all the grace provided last week to surf through the ‘rough stuff.’ Papa is much better (altho very weak and quarantined from appointments & visitors for several weeks.) We are grateful for the continued care from Home Healthcare nurses and therapists coming each day.

LIFE IS A GIFT!  amen… & Lord, please save us!

(the surf down here is still a bit rough!! :  )

Sex Trafficking & … Sunshine??

“You must be the change you want to see in the world.”  (Mahatma Gandhi)

Monday my nieces and 15 of their buddies began a 4-month journey to raise awareness of the horrifying realities of human trafficking – specifically sex trafficking – in the U.S.A.   They are an amazing bunch of dedicated 20-somethings who want to see things change in this ‘R’ rated rubble issue as they seek to ‘be the change’ by rocking the comfort out of the comfortable status quo-ers who can’t be bothered or just don’t care…

WAKE UP  !@#?!  over 200,000 American children are trafficked each year into the sex trade while Joe Schmo down your street drives the demand for child sex by clicking away at internet child pornography. So much rubble in destroyed lives and desecrated beauty of children – KIDS –  who should be hanging out with their dolls or playing b-ball outside.

What a journey to this journey.  I’ve watched my nieces change from girly-girls keeping up with the latest fashions to serious advocates for the seriously oppressed (ok, they are still beautiful Fashionistas, but with a CAUSE!)

While studying photojournalism & advocacy issues in 30 countries, my niece Morgan saw the bloody results of human trafficking when a young prostitute she befriended was brutally raped & dumped naked on the streets of Bangkok. After tracking the issue of human trafficking/child slavery in several countries, Morgan and her photojournalist- mates produced the powerful book ‘Sex + Money: A Global Search for Human Worth’ using photographs and documentation from their 2-year international course.

Five American students on that course were horrified when they returned home to find that human trafficking is a reality for many children in the U.S.  Looking at the daunting issue they refused to give in to the ‘who are we to speak’ syndrome, instead they asked, ‘who are we NOT to speak out?’

With their hearts available to tackle the issue of human sex trafficking in the U.S., Morgan & Autumn & Sarah Jo & Scott & Tim set out 2 years ago with their cameras to create the documentary “Sex + Money: A National Search for Human Worth”… coming soon to a state near you as the screening tour launched Monday hits 48 states (tick, tick, tick…they did Hawaii, Alaska & Washington state in June.)

Check out their website for tour dates:  http://www.sexandmoneyfilm.com

Now – onto SUNSHINE… How does sunshine relate to the incredibly dark rubble of sex trafficking in this film?  Well, in my humble opinion it relates in four ways – first, obviously, by shining light on the issue.

sunrise, Grand Canyon (2008)

This heavy duty Sex + Money documentary exposes the dark side of child-sex-exploitation, how it works, what drives it ($$ & demand), the innocuous path to porn addiction  – bringing all that out in bright sunshine to see manure for what it is: SH-T (oops) POOP that smells & smears on everyone. So well documented through interviews of those involved from every side (the exploited, the exploiters, crime enforcement, NGOs, advocacy groups, congress-people…)

Secondly, these 20-somethings are beacons of sunlight themselves as they struggle to process what they uncover, reflecting that light back to us like a prism we can relate to. (Can you believe a hardcore child-porn website when shut down in Texas had 70,000 subscribers!?!)

As they get angry, pray God we get angry, too!

Third, they seek to be God’s Sunlight (‘Sonlight’) to the hurting. These young people care because they believe God cares for these beloved children and that the heart of Jesus weeps for their used hearts & broken bodies…

Lastly, (they included a few roses in the rubble) – there is a bit of sunshine in the film. Children rescued out of sex slavery looked after with love – so many concerned advocates out there tirelessly raising awareness – law enforcement on board to make changes… Then there’s the music. My other niece, the-very-talented-musician Megan, has been working with a team for months writing & recording the film soundtrack. She & a team of talented musicians are on board the tour to perform with the screenings in art venues & churches.

You’ve got to hear the final movie song – Isaac Gill, one of my nieces’ best friends & an incredibly INCREDIBLE musician, wrote it about SUNSHINE – the sun WILL come out today…. He & Megan & the whole team sang it Sunday at their send off farm picnic (my sister Shere’s southern hospitality notched  them off with extra doses of LOVE!)

Here’s a link to give it a listen (note: i’ve been humming this ALL week & can’t wait to get my hands on the film CD!)    http://snd.sc/rpUjj3

And you know, the weather forecast predicted thunderstorms Sunday evening (not good for outdoor send-off picnics), but the sun DID shine – the whole time – and the Sex + Money touring team is off with the sunlight to shine & (prayers appreciated) keep shining through all 48 states….

Exploiters of children, BEWARE…the Sex+Money sunlight’s gonna get ‘cha!

M&M + some of the Sex+Money Touring Team + friends with Papa on Sunday

Human Trafficking…a poem (by Virginia)

…Hearts Molested…

Children  – Sisters – Daughters – Sons:

Lost.        Taken.

ENSLAVED

To greed, abuse and twisted desires.

Exploited, but not discarded;

Used, again and again.

Hearts crushed.  Bodies violated.  Minds bruised.

Chains of despair – ALL is darkness.

Cries muffled in the night

No chance to dream, living in nightmares.

There is no Light

There is no Hope

There is no Love

Cries of hearts – hearts molested.

Who will hear them?

Courage: to care, to act, to do.

Restore dreams of life unfettered:

Beauty unveiled. Love revealed.

There is Light

There is Hope

There is Love

Soldiers of Light, listen.

Break chains crippling hearts and minds –

The victims AND the victimizers.

Cries of hearts – hearts molested…

Who will help them?

You.

31 July – Saint Ignatius of Loyola

roses in the rubble (Kosovo, 1999)

“He who carries God in his heart bears heaven with him wherever he goes.”

“To give, and not to count the cost
to fight, and not to heed the wounds,
to toil, and not to seek for rest,
to labor, and not to ask for any reward,
save that of knowing that we do Thy will”

“Laugh and grow strong…”

“Speak little, listen much…”

“Go forth and set the world on fire…”
