Responding to Love

There is so much loss in our world and hearts to grieve over these days. Not just loss of loved ones who have died, but also loss of relationships that hurt like fire when someone leaves. On this Lenten Friday, here’s a quote about the relationship between grief and love from one of Virginia’s favorite writers.

“No one dares to grieve who does not dare to love, and love is always part of costly grace. It has been said that before we can give love we must first have received love, and indeed love is a response to love.” Madeleine L’Engle

My heart goes out to friends who have lost loved ones recently. May the peace and grace of Jesus comfort you, and may legacies of love live long in your hearts.

Together We Are Better!

Just a few quickie thoughts today about togetherness. Sometimes we go at it alone when together we could do so much better. Together in the most inclusive sense of the word. Think of how much fun God must have had creating so much diversity – and we are all part of the same family of humanity! Something to celebrate!

“God’s dream is that you and I and all of us will realize that we are family, that we are made for togetherness, for goodness, and for compassion.” Archbishop Desmond Tutu

“Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.” Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Quickie Quote: Honest Humility

“If every flower wanted to be a rose, spring would lose its loveliness.” St. Thérèse of Lisieux

On this Lenten Wednesday, here’s a quote about humility (the good kind)…

“If a flower could speak, it seems to me that it would tell us quite simply all that God has done for it, without hiding any of its gifts. It would not, under the pretext of humility, say that it was not pretty, or that it had not a sweet scent, that the sun had withered its petals, or the storm bruised its stem, if it knew that such were not the case.”  St. Thérèse of Lisieux

FORGIVING OTHERS (more than once!)

“Forgiveness is the key that unlocks the door of resentment and the handcuffs of hatred. It is a power that breaks the chains of bitterness and the shackles of selfishness.” Corrie ten Boom

Forgiveness is one of those hard things Christ asks us to do. In today’s Gospel when Peter asks, “How many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? As many as seven times?” Jesus answers, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.” (Matthew 18:21-22)

Forgiving others is not an easy thing to do once, but 77 times? That’s a whole lot of forgiveness. It’s hard to do on our own steam. We need Holy-Spirit help to forgive with the love of Christ.

As we suffer the ill will of others we should look up at Jesus. See Him hanging on the cross, bloody, beaten, and humiliated – a crown of thorns adorning His head.

Listen to His voice: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

As Jesus forgives us our shortcomings, tempers, our being clay pots with clay feet, He asks us to forgive others, for often they don’t know what they are doing. How they hurt us, others, and themselves.

Imagine Christ’s agony when you think about the difficult people in your life. He suffered to forgive me and to forgive you. Through His Love nailed on the cross we are therefore meant to forgive and love others.

If you’re still struggling to forgive, look at the cross again until His love for you pierces your heart. When that happens, it becomes easier to forgive others with I Corinthians 13 love. (“Love keeps no record of wrongs. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things…”)

Don’t let pride or what “he said, she said” get in the way. Let Christ’s mercy set you free to let forgiveness bloom in your heart…

Sisters Sing! #ChooseToChallenge #IWD2021

March 8th is International Women’s Day. IWD has been commemorated since 1911. Back then most women around the world did not have the right to vote, or many other rights for that matter. Today millions of women around the world will celebrate how far we have come – and how far there is still to go for gender equality to be fully realized.

Last year Virginia posted a Photo Journey celebrating how far we have come. (You can view it by clicking here: International Women’s Day – A Photo Journey.)

To honor this year’s campaign – #ChooseToChallenge – Virginia would like to share a favorite song that encapsulates this year’s theme: “Sing” by Annie Lennox. I have been a groupie of Annie Lennox since the Eurythmics (serving overseas her “Diva” recording played on constant repeat.) She has been a gender equality activist for eons.

“Sing, my sister, sing

Let your voice be heard
What won’t kill you will make you strong

Sing, my sister, sing…

Don’t hide your light behind your fear…
I tell you womankind is strong

Take your beautiful self up to the heights again

Back to the place where you belong…

Sing out
Sing loud
Sing proud…

Sing, my sisters sing  (Lyrics: Annie Lennox)

Here’s a YouTube of the song…

(Email readers you know the drill, click to the Roses website to have a listen.)

Here’s to women having the courage to speak out – loud and proud – challenging what needs changing and celebrating achievements across so many sectors around the world.

Sing, my sisters, sing!!

March Memories: Papa! Mama! Papa & Mama!

March is a month of precious memories for our family – the March 8th memorial of Papa’s passing, Mama’s March 15th birthday, and their March 17th anniversary.

Papa & Mama on their 50th Anniversary

Every day I thank God for the gift of their lives, the legacy of their love and faithfulness –  how Mama took such tender care of Papa through 28 years of quadriplegia in their 58-year marriage, and how Papa loved her so tenderly. He whispered “sweet everythings” to her so often the mush police ran out of ticket paper!

We rejoice that they are together with Jesus in the Presence of Everlasting Love, but we miss them. Lots! We are grateful for the love of Jesus they shared with us and so many.

‘Cause that’s the thing about Papa, he tended hearts for the Kingdom planting seeds of love, the agape kind, and nurtured their growth. When people walked in the door, they felt loved. “How are you, really?” And, he really wanted to know.

Papa was not one for harsh judgment. He liked to get people into the Word of God, and see God at work, changing hearts, changing lives. He called himself a “sweet little ‘ole brown-eyed pastor.”

You just had to watch it when he cut those brown eyes at you. He had a way of getting you to want to do things for God.

Although he couldn’t move anything (even to wipe his nose) he had such gratitude. Not a day went by he didn’t thank us profusely and tell us how much he loved us.

Mama was a steel magnolia, fragile like fine china on the outside but steely strong inside with faithfulness, love, determination, and joy. She sacrificed so much. An accomplished violinist when she met Papa, she put her violin away when she started having us five kids. She would take it out on special occasions, but severe rheumatoid arthritis curtailed her playing in later years.

Mama on her 80th birthday

Mama poured her life out from the deep well of God’s love in her heart that overflowed with generous compassion and care for others. She served selflessly. She loved and lived with unswerving steadfast devotion. She encouraged and inspired others. She gave of herself generously.

Papa and Mama were like glue stuck together, but oh what fun they had together! Singing hymns at the top of their lungs every morning with worship music blasting, they did love and joy on a daily basis amidst challenging circumstances.

Mama & Papa in matching African outfits

Isaiah 40:27-31 is referenced on their gravestone – not just because Papa loved eagles, but as he and Mama became weaker and weaker, the spirit of God soared and did truly amazing things through them.

“Why do you say, O Jacob, and complain, O Israel, ‘My way is hidden from the Lord; my cause is disregarded by my God?’ Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.  He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom.  He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.  Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

As Papa and Mama soar with Jesus in Heaven, March memories fill my heart with legacies of their love, faithfulness and grace.

A Blessing of Tenderness

This morning after squeezing out the last few squirts of a favorite lotion, the mangled container looked a bit worse for wear. Who am I kidding? It looked downright sad, worn out, with nothing left to give…

It reminded me of how I felt some days doing the care-giving gig for my papa and mama. Up several times at night, go-go-going all day, trying to grab a 3 minute shower with splash of makeup amidst never ending needs. (Some days a spray of perfume sufficed.)

Some of you may feel like that now. Not just care-givers but parents looking after children, medical professionals serving on the front lines, teachers giving it their all, researchers working around the clock (the “super-heroes” of vaccines) and everyone who continues to live and give sacrificially for others.

For anyone who is worn out and those of you (myself included) who are “tired of” (there’s so much to be “tired of” a year into the pandemic) here’s a blessing for us today:

“May the God of Tenderness be with you, caressing you with love, gently drawing you into the tenderness of God’s own heart, mellowing you and gentling you as you allow God’s tenderness in you to unfold and blossom.  And may the experience of this tender love so transform you, that others become drawn to our God of love. May the blessing of Tenderness be upon you.” (Sister Maria McCoy)

Thinking About…Heartbeats of Love

What to say, how to say it? So many thoughts weave a dance in my mind, sometimes careening this way, other times that way, occasionally crisscrossing.

“Should I do this? Should I do that? Does it matter either way?”

Then my mind drifts to something else entirely, like what to make for dinner.

Random thoughts appear. Worries that choke forward momentum fall like lead in my stomach. Fear casts its shadow in the mix directing me to the paths of despair.

Extraneous stuff litters the corridors of my mind. Things once used, now discarded. Impressive tools once employed now rust in corners behind pictures of happier times. It’s a messy business walking into the recesses of my mind.

Tiptoeing on into the corridors of my heart scenes flash by: moments of joy, sorrow, love, laughter and friendship. Hope thrashing about during harsh times.

Delving deeper yields a mishmash of memories – some good and some not so good. Through it all an underlying heartbeat of love resounds softly at times, then unbearably loud in moments of clarity and comfort.

The heartbeat of Jesus’ love that says, “I am with you always.”

Open my heart today, Jesus, to hear Your voice within. May my heart beat with Yours now and forever, amen.

“Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? …No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:35-39

Quickie Quote: Effort Ripples

It’s easy to get discouraged as we go about trying to make a difference in our whacked out world, especially when not much seems to change! Here’s a quickie quote to encourage our hearts to keep hoping and doing our bits for God…

“People say, what is the sense of our small effort? They cannot see that we must lay one brick at a time, take one step at a time. A pebble cast into a pond causes ripples that spread in all directions. Each one of our thoughts, words and deeds is like that. No one has a right to sit down and feel hopeless. There is too much work to do.” Dorothy Day

Navigating Life Splatters

A few years ago while enjoying lunch at one of Virginia’s favorite restaurants – the Blue Talon in downtown Williamsburg – my dining companion dropped a full glass of ice tea. Glass shards and tea splattered all over the floor.

Attentive wait staff rushed over. “Those glasses can be so slippery. It’s happened to me!” In minutes shattered glass and tea splatters efficiently disappeared. A new glass of ice tea arrived on the table, gratefully (and carefully) received.

The gracious way our waitress responded diminished our embarrassment factor considerably – and we have been back to the Blue Talon many times. Harsh or denigrating words would have diminished our desire to return.

The Blue Talon also has the BEST ICED COFFEE in Williamsburg!

So Virginia, this relates to Lent how exactly?

It’s not hard to make a mess of things. Life splatters are an inevitable part of our journeys. First off we should not be so quick to denigrate others for their splatters – how is that being God’s love to them?

Some folks picture God as a stern judge quick to mete out punishment for infractions, like a Universal Police enforcer. But, God is not like that. When we screw up God’s arms of love are open wide to receive us, like the Father in the parable of the Prodigal Son.

God wipes our life splatters with merciful Love. We may have broken things, but God provides merciful grace to deal with what’s splattered and shattered. To move forward one step at a time – one day at a time – always welcome in the embrace of God’s love.

“Here is the God I believe in: a Father who, from the beginning of creation, has stretched out His arms in merciful blessing, never forcing Himself on anyone, but always waiting; never letting His arms drop down in despair, but always hoping His children will return so He can speak words of love to them and let His tired arms rest on their shoulders… What I know with unwavering certainty is the heart of the Father. It is a heart of limitless mercy.” Henri Nouwen, “The Return of the Prodigal Son”
