New Beginnings…

Tomorrow is Christmas Eve (ready or not!)  Our Advent hearts await the new day & new light of the Christ child to rekindle the flames of faith in the dark corners of our lives and the world around us.

@ that Christmas in Bethlehem Divine Light entered the world as Love Incarnate ….

@ this Christmas may that same Divine Light of Christ be incarnate Love in us …

…. that our hearts may resound with Joy…

OBX sunrise person (2)“Joy is very quiet and full of wonder.  It is like a light that shines in the darkness and is connected with hope and with love… Let every day be the day of beginning again, of loving Christ a little more, of turning your face toward Him.”    Catherine Doherty

Freddie the Frog does Christmas…

Freddie red chair itouchLet me introduce you to Freddie the Frog (here he is listening to Pink Martini Christmas carols while keeping Virginia company.)

Freddie is SOFT, BIG & GREEN – a cuddly buddy. The kind of friend Virginia likes to have about. But, you see, he was actually my Papa’s.

This four foot gigantic frog belonged to my 83 year old bed-fast quadriplegic Papa?  Yes, there is a good reason…

Three weeks before Papa died I saw Freddie in the pharmacy whilst picking up Papa’s meds. Leaving the store, I went back in to get him after thinking about how he would make my worn out Papa smile. He did. Many times.

freddie eyesFreddie has these eyes that cut over to you (kind of like Papa’s did.)  I would put him in Papa’s line of sight next to his hospital bed in the living room. Peeking around the corner to check on Papa, I would see him cut his eyes to Freddie & then smile.

Big smiles – with a hint of chuckle.  No small feat when Papa had been incessantly sick since the beginning of January.

The thing is, we have a history with frogs. When Mama & Papa called every week while I worked in Tanzania, they could hear frogs croaking through several thousand miles of phone waves (they were really loud!) Papa said when they got on my nerves (late at night trying to sleep) to remember F.R.O.G.:  Full. Reliance. On. God.

Methinks Freddie helped him during his tough sickness, not just with his funky eyes, but as a reminder of what my Papa was all about: doing & being the impossible for God.  Papa lived over 25 years with a debilitating disease but didn’t let it stop him from believing & relying on God each & every day.

To me, my Papa’s 4 Spiritual Secrets sum up what Mary believed when the Angel Gabriel brought the message of Christ’s birth to her: Nothing is impossible with God.  Here are Papa’s secrets..

I’m not, but He is.
And I am in Him, and He is in me.

I can’t, but He can.

And I am in Him, and He is in me.

I don’t want to, but He wants to.

And I am in Him, and He is in me.

I didn’t, but He did.
Because I was in Him and He was in me.

How we miss Papa, especially at this time of year that he so enjoyed. His vibrant spirit centered our celebrations & his presence made our presents to each other all the more meaningful. There’s a big hole in our hearts – but it’s overflowing with the love Papa instilled in us & shared in so many ways.

The love of Jesus Christ Who comforts, trusts, believes, heals & lifts our spirits with joy that doesn’t always make sense, but is & does grace & joy.

This morning while listening to Andrea Bocelli sing “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas” (from his My Christmas CD- a total fav!), Mama spoke out the words of the refrain, “just like the ones I used to know.”  We teared up.  Maybe this Christmas will not be like the ones we used to know, but we have Papa’s memory, his love in our hearts, and …

Freddie and mama….FREDDIE THE FROG.

As we hang out with Freddie, we will remember F.R.O.G (to Fully Rely On God!) and we’ll think of Papa cutting his eyes at him & smiling.

Walking in the Light…

As the end of Advent draws near to Christmas (and our holiday cheer percolates with the stress of what’s undone, done & to-be-done before Thursday) let’s take a moment to put all that aside.  Empty our minds of Christmas clutter and focus on meaning of this season.

“Arise & shine for the Light of the world is come… behold your God.”

I will never forget singing that refrain with the Holy Comforter St. Cyprian Gospel choir 20+ years ago… full sound in rounds resounding with vocal light that brightened the hearts of all in the church (including the choir!)   We also often sang another Gospel song by Thomas Whitfield entitled,“Walk in the Light.”  The lyrics are so relevant for Advent and every day of the year.

WALK IN THE LIGHT
Walk in the light, beautiful light,
come where the dewdrops of mercy shine bright.
Oh shine all around us by day and by night,
Jesus is, Jesus is the light of the world;

Oh we shall walk in the light, beautiful light,
come where the dewdrops of mercy shine bright.
Oh shine all around us by day and by night,
Jesus is , Jesus is the light of the world;

No need to worry, no need to fret,
all of my needs, the man named Jesus has met.
His love protects me from hurt and from harm,
Jesus is, Jesus is the light of the world.

If the gospel be hid, it’s hid from the lost,
my Jesus is waiting to look past your faults.
Arise and shine, your light has come,
Jesus is, I know that He is the only light of this world.

Thomas Whitfield (1954-1992)

Orcs, Elves, Hobbits… and DWARVES!!

“Never underestimate dwarves,” Gandalf tells Bilbo in the last Hobbit movie, “The Battle of the Five Armies.”  It’s NOT a good idea! The dwarves in this segment do get a little off-kilter before they kick some serious orc butt.

As a Tolkien groupie, I have read The Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit once a year every year since 8th grade (let’s just say it’s been over 30 years.) Traditionally this has taken place over the Christmas holidays (you can read my holiday Tolkien tired-itis cure by clicking here…)   This is the first year I haven’t done it, but there’s still time (after Christmas, maybe??)

Compared to the LOTR The Hobbit has always been a lighter read (it’s a children’s book!)  But the movie adaptation has upgraded it to the LOTR realm of guts & gore, linking things mentioned in appendixes & in the LOTR storyline that did happen (but in The Hobbit, Tolkien tells us those matters ‘don’t enter into this tale.’)

Sooooo. I must say I never envisioned Thorin Oakenshield to be quite so dishy. whew!  It’s easy picturing dwarves as rounded Bomburs or as Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) in the LOTR movies. After today’s outing, totally crushing on Thorin (again)…& Kili(~!!) and Fili(~!)

sigh.

Unfortunately in this movie (as in the book) Thorin has a few wee challenges getting his priorities straight once he pounces on the gold under the Mountain. Everybody wants in  on the treasure – some rightly so (those desolated by Dragon Smaug in lake-town) and others because they just want some (the Wood Elves, ok so some of it was theirs originally.) Not to give away too much storyline, but it does build up to “the Battle of the Five Armies” which is the movie title? (like you know a Big Battle’s coming?)

So, movie take-a-ways? hmmn. Loyalty, friendship, honor and good-will vs. greed, greed, greed and evil-willed orcs.

Them orcs, they BAD DUDES.  Full on nothin’ but BAD TO THE BONE.

They fight, and fight, and keep on fighting until swords of light blast them back to the abyss from whence they came.

Gotta love Tolkien.  Good vs. Evil…

…and a little hobbit, Bilbo Baggins of the Shire, helps save the day.

There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure.  If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”  (Thorin’s words to Bilbo, The Hobbit.)

No Room in the Inn ? ?

This morning while listening to The Blind Boys of Alabama’s Talking Christmas compilation, the lyrics to their song “No Room in the Inn” jumped me.  When Joseph brought Mary to Bethlehem, there was ‘no room in the Inn, only a stable would do.’

Gotta think a sec, why did God choose to let His Son be born in a stable? vs. a shiny clean palace of the most ornate sort?

Stables are messy affairs (manure lying about comes to mind.)  If stables are mucked out regularly maybe they’re not so bad, but usually animals tend toward smelliness.

Our world is also rather messy (wars, violence, environmental misdeeds) – some things haven’t changed in 2,000+ years.  Maybe that’s why God chose a stable, to send His pure Light into the messy (that needs cleaning, fixing & saving.)

Our hearts can sometimes be like stables – filled with manure.  Advent is a chance to let God muck it out.  Get rid of what’s rotten in our minds (un-forgiveness, harsh judgement, the loads of trash we’ve let in…)

Don’t we want our hearts to be clean for the Christ-Child @ Christmas? Swept & tidy? No manure or trash lying about?

‘just sayin’… God’s mercy is everlasting (thank You LORD!!) Maybe we need a little quality time emptying out our heart trash, so we can be free in God’s mercy grooves to make better lodgings (penthouse vs. stables) for Christ to dwell within our Heart Inns.

red bushes blooming in the snow

Here’s the photo I wanted to share yesterday (found it! a day late!) to show that after bleak mid-wintery days the sun does (eventually) shine. That is definitely a comforting thought when the bleaks creak us down.

snowy bush (2)But there’s more to take away from this photo.  It’s not a red rose blooming in winter, but a red bush (kinda sorta close.)  Seeing the beauty of this red bush in the snow reminds us to REJOICE!  It’s a happy sort of bush, still blooming with color in the cold of winter.

Isn’t that what Advent is all about?  Light in the darkness?  Joy to the World?

God’s Son-Light (Jesus Christ) helping us see beauty around us & within us:

Bleak Mid Winters?

This post-a-day Advent gig is getting a little harried, so today let’s mind-munch another carol.  While listening to Annie Lennox Christmas Cornucopia”  (that sees playlist action all year around : ) the words to In the Bleak Midwinter zapped me this a.m.

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign.
In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ…

Angels and archangels may have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;
But His mother only, in her maiden bliss,
Worshipped the beloved with a kiss.

What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart.

Christina Rossetti (1830-1894)

BG Tree with LightsOur hearts may feel like bleak mid winter landscapes – cold and brittled by our fears and failures, tears of wasted years past.  Or maybe our hearts have been broken by beanheads (or beanheadettes) and we’re just not letting anyone else in.

Lift up ye heads, oh ye gates, be lifted up, ye ancient doors, that the King of Glory may come in… (Psalm 24:9)

Give it up (all those dreary fears.)  Open up (dry your tears.)  Step up (and try again.)

Let the King of Glory into the stables of our hearts.  Let Him be born anew in us today.

Yes, Virginia There IS a Santa Claus

As faithful Roses in the Rubble readers know,  your humble blogger is Virginia.  And, yes, she is from (& currently resides) in the State of Virginia.  And, guess what? My mother’s name is also Virginia (altho most folks call her ‘Ginny’) & my Papa’s mother was also Virginia (“Virginia Claire’)… and my maternal great-aunt, also Virginia.  (that explains why there’s two Virginias in our immediate family – i’m named after my Mama & Grandmama & Great Aunt : )

So, last weekend while suffering from a bout of sniffles & sore throat (gifted from brother dearest who had a bad infection for 3 weeks) i searched for a Christmas-ish read, like Baen’s Cosmic Christmas 2 You  (check out this previous blog post!)  and downloaded science fiction author John C. Wright’s “Book of Feasts and Seasons.”

I have not read any of John C. Wright’s books (yet) but found his story, “Yes, Virginia There is a Santa Claus” to be quite moving.  And, guess what, he posted a gift copy of this story for all to read on his (seemingly very cool) blog.

(Click here to read.)

…Maybe science fiction/fantasy is not your thing, but you should give it a read. His two main characters are Virginia (a little girl) and her mother, Virginia.  Methinks you might need a kleenex or two by the end (& not just for a runny nose!)

So, if you ask this Virginia, is there a Santa Claus?

hmmmn, well, maybe… like, possibly…

SURE THING!

Rejoice, Rejoice!!

Yesterday Mama & I were blessed to hear the Williamsburg Community Chapel concert (the Chapel graciously video-fed it into Papa’s computer so Mama could watch it on his very big screen.)  From start to finish, what glorious, glorious music!  Papa & Mama looked forward to seeing it every year – they would sing along with all the carols like they were in the choir.  The words from one of Papa’s favorite carols (that baritone Branch Fields sang so well!) seem special to share today…

Of the Father’s Love Begotten

Of the Father’s heart begotten,
Ere the world from chaos rose,
He is Alpha, from that Fountain
All that is and hath been flows;
He is Omega, of all things,
Yet to come the mystic Close,
Evermore and evermore…

O how blest that wondrous birthday,
When the Maid the curse retrieved,
Brought to birth mankind’s salvation
By the Holy Ghost conceived,
And the Babe, the world’s Redeemer
In her loving arms received,
Evermore and evermore.

Sing, ye heights of heaven, his praises;
Angels and Archangels, sing!
Wheresoe’er ye be, ye faithful,
Let your joyous anthems ring,
Every tongue his name confessing,
Countless voices answering,
Evermore and evermore.

Now let old and young uniting
Chant to thee harmonious lays
Maid and matron hymn Thy glory,
Infant lips their anthem raise,
Boys and girls together singing
With pure heart their song of praise,
Evermore and evermore.

Let the storm and summer sunshine,
Gliding stream and sounding shore,
Sea and forest, frost and zephyr,
Day and night their Lord alone;
Let creation join to laud thee
Through the ages evermore,
Evermore and evermore.

(Latin translation by Roby Furley Davis, 1866-1937)

Light in Darkness

Tonight we had the unique experience of seeing Memorial Park, where our dear Papa’s grave lies, lit up with 2,000 candles.  As my brother Dwight drove Mama & I around it was amazing to see bags & bags of small candles placed on both sides of the roadway around the park. They literally ‘lit up’ the path (the park is always closed at night, so it’s really dark – this was a special occasion..)  Kinda surreal … but comforting.

Light in the darkness….  we remember Papa, his love & laughter & joy & the way he reflected the light of Jesus Christ to us & to so many, day in & day out.

We miss him!  Oh, how we miss him.  But we know he is in the Presence of Everlasting Light…  Jesus Christ.
