International Women’s Day 2012 – in Appreciation…

Yep, it’s here. Time to celebrate & appreciate all the women in your life and collectively around the globe.  (Just remember, you men, without WOMEN – especially your mothers – you would not be here!)

A bit reflective on this International Women’s Day, I am so blessed with the impact of so many amazing women in my life – from my wonderful Mama, sisters, aunties, grandmothers, mentors, friends, colleagues & the many women I’ve met all around the globe who are lights in their communities, who have trampled suffering down with courageous hearts to be change where they are, sometimes quietly like a gentle breeze nurturing change and sometimes loudly like a thunderous lightning bolt to counter violence & systems of injustice.

I am So Very Grateful …

… for my first mentor, Edie, who after serving as VP of a Canadian company way back when few women held corporate leadership roles, shared freely of her expertise, time, faith & friendship with 22 yr old Virginia in Washington, D.C.

… for my mentor, Susan, who crisscrossed the U.S. with a heart for so many issues serving on the Boards of 13 non-profits & introduced me to Isaiah 58 (& to WV, the agency I worked for 10+ yrs.)

… for Arlene & the women of the Holy Comforter St. Cyprian Gospel Choir who shared their faith, friendship & lives in the inner city of D.C.

… for Mimi (may she R.I.P) who added much needed tools to my professional toolkit (along a sometimes bumpy way) & helped strengthen my faith.

… for Nora whose courageous leadership & work with Palestinian women in the West Bank & Gaza Strip inspired me & continues to inspire so many women.

… for Karen, who used her regional Communications expertise to train up this fledgling Communicator ‘in the way she needed to go’ & who was such an encourager (‘front page U.K. magazine photo – way to go!’ when clueless VA had no idea what was what!)

… for Gerry, who stuck it out 30+ yrs in the Gaza Strip serving others…(& who was always so much fun to be with!)

… for Carol who made working in Gaza FUN (!) & for Anne & Ranaa, whose friendship made 5 yrs in Bethlehem bearable…

… for Jane, Rania, Lisa, Georgette, Rula N., Rula Q., Samah & Alice – my Palestinian (& Armenian) colleagues & sisters, who taught me about joy in suffering.

… for Lisa, my Israeli friend who is teaching Leadership to ARAB MEN in a Palestinian seminary (the significance is not that she’s Jewish teaching Arabs, but that SHE’S A WOMAN! And they say her class is their favorite!)

…for Rebecca Cherono (may she R.I.P) who went out of her way to open doors of opportunity (“we are sisters, Virginia, we must stick together!”) & taught me so much about facilitating women’s programs in Gaza & all around the world.

…for Sheila & Niceta, Leadership Team colleagues in Tanzania, who taught me so much about Africa, Advocacy, Capacity Building (including mine!), community development & friendship in adversity (through malaria,  deaths of loved ones, change management & sorting out routine organizational tussles.

… for Beatrice Minja & all the women co-leaders & laborers  in Africa (Dorcas, Polly, Veronica, Eunice, Doreen, Francesca, Joylline, Happiness, Priscilla, Edna, Amboka, Clare, Nels, Esther, Fe & Jules…) who helped in the fight against malaria & so many other things.

… for Fatuma, a dear family friend and colleague who was one of the 1st women leaders in her country before persecution forced her to flee, who now tirelessly leads global gender programs  for a very ;arge INGO.

… for Catherine, my Irish buddy who taught me how to drive (on the wrong side of the road, in a clutch car, on the busy streets of Arusha) & how to have real fun on St. Paddy’s Day in Africa… (details soon to follow…)

… for Suzanne & Rosemary, my Canadian buddies who helped so much (broken ankles, neck surgeries) & taught me how to relax (South Beach Sunday picnics) to be more effective. (And, kudos to Rosemary for climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro after her 60th birthday & then working the past 2 years in Egypt developing a better curriculum for girls!)

… for Helen Kij0-Bisimba, our Board Chairperson in Tanzania & dear friend who continues to teach me so much about perseverance (as an always-active human rights lawyer who just finished her Ph.D. well after her 50th birthday.)

… for my sisters, Shere & Cindy, for their love & encouragement & support & leadership (by example) of what it means to Be Love (even if you’re not a morning person : )  …and my sister-in-law, Lynn, who is Love to my brother & to all of us.

… and for my Mama, her overflowing heart of love that led us by example of how to be pushy (‘you must practice your piano’… ‘eat your peas’… ‘don’t date that bad-for-you boy’…) and soft (‘I love you so much’ … ‘we are so proud of you’… ‘we are so grateful to God to be your parents’)  and beautiful – outside & inside with faith in God that is Rock. Solid. Strong.

Thank you God – and big Thank You’s to all these special ladies and so many more (there’s not enough space to list them all in the Blog-o-Sphere!!!)

Wednesday Photographs: Inspiring Women of KENYA!!

Since tomorrow is International Women’s Day, today we’re visiting with the Samburu women in the Samburu District of northern Kenya. When i visited this tribe (as with many tribes & villages throughout Africa) i was so impressed to see how the women work together to Get Things Done… for their children, for their husbands, for their communities… for their countries.

From managing water systems to schools to creative micro-enterprises to support their children, these tribal women inspire me.  Maybe they don’t have the latest iPhone or TVs or even electricity in many places , but their ingenuity & leadership & Willingness To Do Something is something we can all learn from…

p.s.  i love Kenyans! After moving to Tanzania (where i had never been before) i got into lots of trouble when i told my Tanzanian colleagues, “well, i figured if Tanzanians were half as nice as Ugandans & Kenyans, i will be OK…” To which my new colleagues replied, “We Tanzanians are TWICE AS NICE as Kenyans.”  … well, after living 4 years there, i love Tanzanians, TOO! : )

Gifted Hands: the Ben Carson story….

As we gear up for International Women’s Day on Thursday, i thought it would be great to highlight inspirational women this week.  And this AMAZINGLY INSPIRATIONAL MOVIE about Dr. Benjamin S. Carson (one of the finest Brain Surgeons In The World) totally fits…

ok, ok, so Dr. Ben’s a GUY (!) but the movie highlights the Very Important Role his mother made that made his eventual success possible (with lots of help from God.) Three Cheers for our Mothers!! and for Sonya Carson, played outstandingly well in this movie by Kimberly Elise, who pushes her son (with lots of Love) to overcome obstacles of all shapes & sizes even as she battles her own challenges.

This is a True Story.  Struggling to make it in Detroit, Sonya looks after Ben & his brother by cleaning homes and scraping pennies every which way she can after her husband leaves them with no support.  Although she can’t read, she pushes her boys to study, to see more than the poverty around them – opening their minds to possibilities vs. the stereotyped roles of African Americans in the 1960s.   As she cleans the homes of wealthy familes, she notices they don’t watch TV, so she limits television (2 shows only on weekends – how those boys Pout!) but she holds her ground & takes them to the Library where she introduces them to Books: they must read TWO each week AND give her a written report.

Despite setbacks (like being labeled ‘Dummy’ in his elementary class), racial injustice & prejudice, Ben excels (after he reads lots of those books and begins applying himself) over his white classmates causing No Small Stir.  During an assembly as he is called up to receive an award for the best academic student in 8th grade, his white teacher gives him the award – then berates the white children & their parents for “not doing better than this coloured boy.” (She really needed someone to SLAP HER) but no one does or says anything.

Grrrrrrr.  But Ben & his mother don’t let that stop them as she continues to affirm him – ‘You CAN do this… God has given you a Brain” …nudging & pushing & loving him through tough times as he makes his way to Yale, then Medical School, then to Johns Hopkins where he becomes the youngest head of of Pediatric Neurosurgery EVER.

If you like ER, House or hospital shows, you will love this drama as Dr. Ben Carson – played brilliantly by Cuba Gooding Jr. – tackles the most complicated surgeries (separating conjoined twins etc.) with faith & GIFTED HANDS… after the gifted hands & heart of his mother Sonya Carson provided a foundation of perseverance to do what God called him to do.

Highly recommend this movie AND there’s also a book (by Gregg Lewis & Deborah Shaw Lewis) that goes into more detail.

Mahatma Gandhi (wise words from…)

“If we are to reach real peace in this world and if we are to carry on a real war against war, we shall have to begin with children; and if they will grow up in their natural innocence, we won’t have to struggle, we won’t have to pass fruitless idle resolutions.  But we shall go from love to love and peace to peace, until at last all the corners of the world are covered with that peace and love for which, consciously or unconsciously, the whole world is hungering. ”    (Young India 19 November 1931, p. 361)

“The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.”

“Interview to the Press” in Karachi (23 March 1931); Gandhi is asked two questions. First: “Do you not think it impolitic to forgive a government which has been guilty of a thousand murders?” Gandhi replies: “I do not know a single instance where forgiveness has been found so wanting as to be impolitic.” In a follow-up question, Gandhi is asked: “But no country has ever shown such forgiveness as India is showing to Britain?” Gandhi replies: “That does not affect my reply. What is true of individuals is true of nations. One cannot forgive too much. The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.”    (from Wikiquotes)

Icons: Jesus the Teacher

This is one of my favorite icons(!) After getting ‘zapped’ by a version of it on the wall of Saint Catherine’s Monastery on Mount Sinai (while visiting Egypt 19 yrs ago!), i put a framed 7 x 14″ print on the wall of my office in Jerusalem & then toted it to subsequent postings all around the globe.

Before living in the Middle East & encountering the beautiful traditions of Orthodox churches (of all varieties) , i was not familiar with icons – but there’s lots of prayer & spiritual discipline put into this liturgical art form that is meant to draw us closer to God & the important tenets of our faith.

When i look at this icon each morning & throughout the day, it reminds me to pray:     “Lord Jesus, teach me Your ways.”  (of course, when my ways bump up against His ways, i sometimes need to add, ‘please open my mind & heart & spirit that i may know Your ways AND DO THEM!)

…  i’m not sure about you, but Wisdom is on my daily ‘must ask God for’ list (sometimes More Than Once!)  Even a glance at Jesus the Teacher triggers another quick prayer:  “Lord Jesus Christ, please transform my heart & mind & spirit with Your wisdom.”

….& listening closely, i may hear Jesus saying:

“Study My words. Know My words. BE My words.”

Amen.

…a prayer from ‘Virginia The Crab’

…feeling a Bit Grumpy this morning, this old entry from an overseas journal (& a much younger Virginia)  made my heart smile (a little; getting over the Grumps is hard, even in beautiful Williamsburg! : )

Bethlehem, December 18, 1994

Rejoice always in the Lord. Let your gentleness be evident to all. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God, and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Jesus Christ.       Philippians 4:4

Lord Jesus, I come before you both anxious and depressed.  My life seems quite the mess at the moment with uncertainties, wandering thoughts… and now even car troubles to boot. My roots in You have become shallow & I am losing these battles, trying (or rather not trying) to look to You for strength and peace in all these things.

BE GENTLE.  Yet this crab liveth and walketh, trampling all in her path.

REJOICE.  Crabs have a hard time in that department.

DO NOT BE ANXIOUS.  I’m freaking out & I’m not sure I’ll be here much longer.

Lord Jesus, I place these frustrations before You… & ask Your forgiveness for not turning to You in ALL things, and for being such a grouchy crab.  Please fill me with Your peace and joy.  St. Paul said, “all things work together for good for all those called according to Your purposes.”  Show me Your purpose, Lord, in my life & please deliver more peace and joy…. (more grace & love would be good, too!)

in Your Name… Amen.

p.s.  an Afterword: the Car at that time was fixed (God is Good – All the Time!) & i ended up staying THREE MORE YEARS… so Grace & Love & Peace & Joy (on & off – it was a tough place to work!) did flow from the Heavenlies to & through this Cracked Clay Pot (isn’t it comforting to know that as our cracks get wider, there’s More Room for the Light of Christ to shine through?? : )

p.s.2… the older (hopefully wiser??) Virginia would have asked for more Mercy.. LOTS OF MERCY… as indeed she has already humbly asked Jesus this a.m.

…a prayer for friday in Lent (from Charles Spurgeon)

“Lord, help me to glorify You; I am poor, help me to glorify You by contentment; I am sick, help me to give You honour by patience; I have talents, help me to extol You by spending them for You; I have time, Lord, help me to redeem it, that I may serve You; I have a heart to feel, Lord, let that heart feel no love but Yours, and glow with no flame but afection for You; I have a head to think, Lord, help me to think of You and for You; You have put me in this world for something, Lord, show me what that is, and help me to work out my life-purpose: I cannot do much, but as the widow put in her two mites, which were all her living, so, Lord, I cast my time and eternity too into Your treasury; I am all Thine; take me, and enable me to glorify You now, in all that I say, in all that I do, and with all that I have.”   Charles H. Spurgeon

Judy Bailey: Music spinning Upside Down!

Inspiring music, inspiring words… & an incredibly inspiring musician who globetrotts the world lifting spirits, sharing her songs with bands in jam-packed venues and on the ground with children in Africa, guitar in hand.

Judy Bailey started performing Gospel music at an early age – really well(!); she won awards in her native Barbados before launching over to the U.K. & then to Germany where her global music ministry is based today. (Along the way she met her German husband … so single ladies, be sure to Go Where you are Meant To Go, re: that Faith Thing you are Meant To Do!)

I met Judy & her husband in Tanzania when they came to visit projects supported by our Germany office (Judy had donated funds from one of her recordings.)  Not only does this lady sing, she also raises awareness of global issues as a Goodwill Ambassador for World Vision, a large Christian relief & development agency.

During their visit i was so impressed with how humble Judy is & how much Fun she had playing her guitar with the kids, engaging them in the music. After a formal-ish encounter, she just pulled out her guitar, started strumming & the children came out of themselves to be themselves around her.

And her VOICE. wow… She ROCKs!

She gave us CDs & i still so enjoy playing “Extraordinary Light” on her “Found the Sun” compilation… it helps me get going in the morning on my Gospel Playlist & makes me want to Spin Around (more practice for the Heavenlies as methinks we will Not be Sitting on our Tushis Up There!)

Just an ordinary day but extraordinary light

An apt description of what Judy’s music does – even if we’re spinning upside down by what life throws at us, it brings Extraordinary Light (the Heavenly Kind) whenever played…

Here’s a link to Judy’s website to read about her faith & amazing career… (& you can listen to an excerpt of “Extraordinary Light” …)

Wednesday Photographs: Niagara Falls (& a little Inspiration)

'under' the Niagara Falls (July, 2007)

Inspiration from Isaiah (more Favorite Verses!!)

“But now thus says the Lord, He who created you, O Jacob, He who formed you, O Israel:  Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are Mine.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through the fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.

For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, Your Saviour.”                (Isaiah 43:1-3)

The Closer: Inspiration (between murders) on TV!

More than just Inspirational Appreciation of Brenda’s hot husband Fritz & dreamy Sgt. Gabriel in each episode, The Closer can most certainly be considered Inspirational TV.  As Atlanta transplant  Deputy Police Chief Brenda Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick) struggles to adapt to L.A., lead her L.A.P.D. special team in tackling High Profile murders (& other Very Bad Goings-On), and Have A Life (with her F.B.I. agent Husband, Fritz) – she is so very inspiring (& often hilarious..)

This is one of my favorite t.v. shows(!) Last year my sister Shere gave me the 1st Season on DVD & then we  ‘Co-Gifted’ the rest (her birthday – my birthday – Sisters Day) for Seasons 2 – 6 & will look forward to Season 7 (maybe Christmas?)

ok, you may think, just another Cop Show… but there’s great Character Development of each member of Brenda’s Team (altho they could spend a Bit More Time focusing on Sgt. Gabriel : )  & how they face their personal & professional challenges & how (over time) they come together as a Team.

Brenda & her Team tackle Tough Stuff – human trafficking, rape, gang wars, pediophile kidnappings & Homicides of every type (usually a Murder Investigation of some sort gets each show going…)  It’s not necessarily rated G for Grandmama (contingent upon respective Murder-O-Meters…)

Writing about Father Gregory Boyle, S.J. yesterday reminded me of My Favorite Episode that methinks is based on him in Real Life.  In Season 5, Episode 5 (“Half Load,”) Brenda must solve the murder of a former gang member who is working at the Crenshaw Community Center run by Father Jack – who runs a ministry helping reformed Gang members (kind of like Homeboy Industries ?!?) In the 1st Season Brenda bumped heads with this same Father Jack (!), so this episode is particularly good as they Must Sort Out Their Differences and Try to Get Along – to find the killer & bridge the growing gulf between the community the the L.A.P.D.

This episode gets Five Stars from Virginia’s Inspiratameter (*****)!   Check it out & see if you’re not inspired…
