Inspirational Tattoos on the Heart

Father Gregory Boyle, founder of Homeboy Industries in L.A., writes poignantly of Boundless Compassion, Redemption & the ‘Slow work of God’ in his book, Tattoos on the Heart.  Providing powerful snapshots of his ministry among violent Gang Members in Los Angeles, Fr. Boyle takes us where our fears may never allow us to go and shows us what Hope amidst despair (seasoned with Lots of Perseverance) can do.

Unlike St. Augustine’s massive City of God, this is a short book – a great opportunity during Lent to expand our compassion horizons.  In each chapter Fr. Greg tackles a theme (God, grace, compassion, jurisdiction, patience, success etc.) using stories from his 20+ years in this ministry.

Seems to me that Fr. Boyle is Love with Skin On to a community we would rather just transplant straight to prison — but he sees (with the Eyes of Jesus Christ) their value as Beloved Sons & Daughters of our Heavenly Creator (of course, his Guardian Angels are probably using some Heavy Duty Divinely Bullet-Proofed vests!)

As the Thief next to Jesus on the Cross believed when Jesus told him, “you will be with me in Paradise,” so, too, many of these young men and women experience redemption and new opportunities at Homeboy Industries (‘Jobs not Jails’) where Tough Love is available 24/7. Although after a particularly major office screw-up, Fr. Boyle writes: “Normally, I’d want to throttle this kid and give him the ‘what for.’ I manage something I rarely can.  I morph into Mother Teresa AND Ghandi.”

Fr. Greg’s raw honesty will move your heart.

There are many ‘success’ stories in the book (i especially liked the hilarious description of 3 former Gang members visiting the Laura Bush White House when one of them forgets his brand new suit pants!), but what has stuck with me for more than a year is how Fr. Boyle’s chapter entitled “Success” is about everything but what we would define as a successful outcome.

Success in the gang-wars of L.A. requires a paradigm shift in thinking, as Fr. Boyle shares challenging stories: after losing 2 sons to violent deaths, one mother encounters the shooter of her son in the ICU ward where she works & then prays for him to live because ‘I don’t want his mom to go through what I have.’

No bullet can pierce Fr. Greg’s vision for restored & renewed youths & communities in L.A, even though there’s so much pain & so much death, because his is the vision of Jesus Christ’s love for ALL PEOPLE (even Gang members who point guns at us & each other..)

“I want to lean into the challenge of intractable problems with as tender a heart as I can locate, knowing that there is some divine ingenuity here, ‘the slow work of God,’ that gets done if we’re faithful.”   (Father Gregory Boyle, S.J.)

J.B. Phillips: Exposition on the Beattitudes…

On this 1st Sunday of Lent, here are inspiring words to ponder from the great Scripture scholar, J.B. Phillips…

Sea of Galilee

‘Exposition on the Beattitudes’

 Most people think:

Happy are the pushers: for they get on in the world.

Happy are the hard-boiled: for they never let life hurt them.

Happy are they who complain: for they get their own way in the end.

Happy are the blasé: for they never worry over their sins.

Happy are the slave drivers: for they get results.

Happy are the knowledgeable men of the world: for they know their way around.

Happy are the trouble-makers: for people have to take notice of them.

But Jesus Christ said:

Happy are those who realize their spiritual poverty: they have already entered the kingdom of Reality.

Roses by the Sea of Galilee

Happy are they who bear their share of the world’s pain: in the long run they will know more happiness than those who avoid it.

Happy are those who accept life and their own limitations: they will find more in life than anybody.

Happy are those who are ready to make allowances and to forgive: they will know the love of God.

Happy are those who are real in their thoughts and feelings: in the end they will see the ultimate Reality, God.

Happy are those who help others to live together: they will be known to be doing God’s work.

MOVIES: Inspiration & Determination & AKEELAH!!

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.”   (Marianne Williamson)

Dr. Larabee (Laurence Fishburne) asks Akeelah (Keke Palmer) to read this quote as she struggles to fulfull her potential in the truly inspiring movie, “Akeelah & the Bee.”   It’s something to phonder on this very cold & windy Saturday (an excellent opportunity for indoor movies…)

Last week after viewing several War Movies & the action flick ‘Fast 5’ (rated ‘PG’ so thought ok for Mama, but after the first car heist scence -Off A Moving Train- suddenly she had Things To Do elsewhere!) i pulled this DVD off the shelf to redeem the Entertainment Officer’s status with the Savvy Saints.

ooooh – Akeelah is SO VERY INSPIRING! Even though we’ve seen this before, there’s so much more to ‘get’ each time:  the role of education, importance of family, community, friendships, mentorships & relationships along with determination, perspiration & inspiration — all as 11-yr old Akeelah tackles the challenge of making it from her humble L.A. inner city neighborhood to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Keke’s spunky Akeelah takes on the system – she hates her elementary school, skips classes & doesn’t feel motivated to Do Much…until her principal challenges her to partipate in their 1st Spelling Bee, and then the local Bee, regional Bee and on.

Not to give the story away, but along the way Akeelah realizes she Needs Others: help from Dr. Larabee, her mother (played AWESOMELY by Angela Bassett), her friends, her classmates & her community.

This is an Outstanding Movie – i highly recommend(!) By the end we were jumping out of our seats cheering Akeelah on (well, Papa’s Heart was jumping up!)

Your hearts will be touched & uplifted, too, as you watch this get-up-&-Cheer movie!

Isaiah 58: A Faith Motivator…

As an Isaiah groupie I am so grateful to God for this great Prophet of Faith; so often while delving into his writings inspired words jump off the page – (zap!) – straight to my heart.

One of my favorite passages (there are many) is Isaiah 58.  Many years ago I read it, then read it again and again until eventually it became motivation for this redhead to step out of her comfortable life and launch into new adventures as an overseas relief & development worker (that was 1992 and now it’s 2012: 20 years -yikes!)

The truths in this chapter are not just for overseas or for the young and strong of knees, they are for us wherever we are, at any age, whatever we’re doing, and most especially as we observe Lent.

“…  Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for a man to humble himself?  Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed and for lying on sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord?

Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice, and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?  Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter – when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and He will say: Here am I.

If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.

The Lord will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land, and will strengthen your frame.  You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail…  (Isaiah 58:5-11)

After 5 years working in the sun-scorched land of the West Bank & Gaza Strip, subsequent years in Africa, and globetrotting to arid regions of India: water in the desert is not easy to find. Bore wells must be very deep which makes them very expensive (did I mention one of my jobs was coordinating a safe-water initiative for 14 countries?)

To take Isaiah’s challenge seriously, we must go deep into our hearts and ask for God’s help pouring His Healing love into our spirits dried out from scorched circumstances (illness, loss of loved ones, loss of jobs, burn-out, hey it happens to relief & development workers!)

St. George’s Monastery (Wadi Qelt, West Bank)

After we pray, we may not look on the outside like well-watered gardens (constantly giving to others or working for the oppressed when nothing ever changes can take a physical toll) but for our Spirits, hey, there’s hope…

God is faithful… He will provide – like flowers in the desert..

Ash Wednesday & a Lent Challenge….

Lent is here ALREADY… time to put away those chocolates (while recuperating from Chocolate Hangovers), turn off the TV, hide the coffee beans, sweets & whatever else we’ve decided to Give Up for Lent…

My list is the same – year after year – Chocolate (very Hard), Wine (also hard), Chips or ‘crisps’ in British (Doritos VERY HARD), Coffee (not hard), Meat (not hard since i’ve been a Pro-Vegetable Pescetarian 3 yrs now)…

But this year I decided to go for a Big Sacrifice – Black Tea (of all varieties.) Since I make at least 4 pots a day, this Will Be Tough (although notice not offering up Tea altogether as some Green Teas are good, but i kinda depend on those Nice Black Teas to get going in the morning & keep going in the Afternoon.)

Some people give up Facebook, or Movies, or TV or what what…It’s not just about discipline (although exercising discipline muscles is Good for our Faith) but the idea of giving up stuff is to actually think about the suffering of Jesus (or at least something Faith-related) as you feel those chocolate cravings or Want A Big Cuppa strong Tea.

Lent, however, is not just a time to Give Up things…but also to DO something about our faith… maybe get to church a bit more (not just on Sundays), look a bit more outside ourselves to the needs around us & our world (getting in Faith shape means looking up to God more & then looking around ablaze with His love for Others..), volunteering in local outreach ministries, setting aside more Time for Prayer & Bible Study etc..

The thing is – I think these things are important the Whole Year (not just Lent) – but hey, if we start (or re-engage) these good Faith Habits during Lent, maybe we’ll catch the Fire to be On Fire for our faith All Year Around…

Last year my Big Challenge was reading St. Augustine’s City of God (remains at the bottom of the ‘in progress reading pile’) I may have another go at it, but this year I’ve decided to take on a Bigger ‘to do for Lent’ Challenge:

To post something inspirational EACH DAY OF LENT here on this Blog.

This will actually be a Bit Hard, as there’s usually only time for 2 posts a week (& note the recent Wednesday photographs make one post a bit easier! : )    But I will try (with God’s Help) … keeping in mind that an inspirational quote does count as a Post, or photo, or movie, or book – not just spiritual reflections that take heaps of time to write!

To start off, here’s an Ash Wednesday Photograph (from an Easter card i made Long Ago)

Wednesday Photographs: Canadian Clouds & Roses…

Lobster Cove, Gros Morne National Park (Newfoundland, July 2000)

After i finished grad school (a few years ago!) my brother & i put 5,000 miles on his car during a driving holiday of the Canadian Maritimes + Newfoundland. After a grand week on Prince Edward Island & a few beauteous stops in Nova Scotia, we ferried it up to St. Johns & then drove across Newfoundland to the truly majestic Gros Morne National Park …then up to St. Anthony’s (the tippy top of NF)…then all the way back down to Port aux Basques & over by ferry & on to New Brunswick.  All AMAZING!!Every place we stayed (all B&Bs) the heart-warming Canadian Hospitality wowed us ! : )

Charlottetown Roses (Prince Edward Island)

But have to leave you with an After-Valentine’s Day Canadian Rose…that reminds me of the amazing Canadian Roses (the people kind) who have helped me soar above rocky rubble in so many places (from D.C. to the Middle East & especially in Africa!)

Valentine’s Day – it’s Here !!

Egads, every year this mush-filled day creeps up on us – WHAM – it’s here.  Time to forage for chocolates & share beautiful roses with those we love (or make a nice meal or special cakes or cookies or whatever  – with lots of chocolate!)

CHOCOLATE (definitely works for me), but roses are nice (note here at Roses in the Rubble, your author has a thing for roses, like she regularly indulges in dozens for any occasion – last year’s Super Bowl? Yellow & white roses : )

The thing is, on this day when sweethearts get all gooey-eyed, there are many folks out there who are single… maybe forever single, or single (again) or what what, but seeing everyone get all sentimental everywhere is Not Easy.

When I was young(er) & lived in Washington, D.C., & being Dateless on this day was a Big Deal, one year instead of drowning myself in chocolates (kinda fun, actually) I decided to send out Valentine’s cards to all those I loved, ‘liked-a-lot,’ and then those who I maybe didn’t like-a-lot, but who God loves-a-lot.. so basically, most everyone I knew – it turned into quite a big pile (a Big Mailing Project – this was, gasp, pre-Internet, email & FB!)

If you’re experiencing Valentines Day Blues (or even if you have an awesomely awesome mate), you can start by thanking God for all those in your life who have loved YOU.. and who you LOVE (not just mushy relationships, but you know, those Other Kinds – friendship, mentorship, family-ship) … and then TELL THEM YOU LOVE THEM (or maybe “care a-lot” if that L-O-V-E word is hard to articulate…)

In that long-ago Valentine mailing I included a bright pink paper insert of Saint Paul’s Valentine about God’s Love (located in I Corinthians 13…)

“If I speak in the tongues of  men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.  If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries & all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.  If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It is not rude, it is not self seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails.  But where there are prophesies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.  For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection, as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face.  Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.

But the greatest of these is Love.

This kind of God’s love is rather hard to have & to share. But as my Papa says (rather often), “I can’t but He can….” methinks this Love is the ‘must-ask-God’s-Help-for kind (especially if your husband, partner, boyfriend forgot Valentines Chocolates, again?!)

Singletons don’t get a free pass on this one, as God calls us ALL to be filled with this kind of Love… yep, that Beanhead co-worker, your cranky neighbor, that always-a-downer to see friend… or irascible family members (it is actually a good idea to give lots of room to sisters, mothers, daughters going through ‘The Change’ – lots of room, and remember THEY ARE ALWAYS RIGHT!)

re: ‘Love is patient… & it keeps No Record Of Wrongs..’

So, as you contemplate Love on this Valentines Day…1st, know that you ARE loved by our Heavenly Creator – His fountain of Love for us never runs dry – then ask to be filled from that Agape Fountain, and you might hear His voice saying:’

“Receive My love ANEW, to BE My love ANEW…”

Let’s open up our hearts!  (a little wider…)

grace, peace & Valentines Love (the Heavenly Kind!)

p.s. oops, forgot to add a good Valentine Movie recommendation, if you want to snuggle up with a box of Chocolates (and if, like us, you already watched the Sound of Music this year, such an inspiring romance!)…check out “Return to Me” a total FAVORITE (Bonnie Hunt, David Duchovny – woot, woot!, Minnie Driver, Carol O’Connor, Jim Belushi and more..)

It’s totally inspiring, but also – lots of fun!! : )

Super Bowl XLVI: Does God care Who wins??

I don’t know…(maybe God is still busy trying to sort out the Rules of Rugby!)

Today MILLIONS of Americans will gather glued to their TVs to watch the Big Football Game – the Super Bowl – as the New York Giants take on the New England Patriots.

I’m sure lots of folks on both sides will be ‘praying’ their teams on to victory…

In recent months there’s been quite a bit of hoopla over God’s role in Football (re: Denver Bronco quarterback Tim Tebow’s not-so-shy expressions of faith on the field during Games & his straight-up off the field faith testimony.)

As a forever fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, I’m kinda indifferent to the Denver Broncos (or the Giants or the Patriots or anybody else) but one thing for SURE: it’s refreshing to have a NFL quarterback (or any football player for that matter) in the headlines for his FAITH (& his stand to, like, save himself for marriage) in an industry where many player headlines unfortunately seem like Law & Order episodes (with Rapes, Violent Goings-On & Crimes of all sorts…)

Back to God’s role in Football… ok, I confess that I’ve certainly prayed (at times quite fervently) for my Team to win (with the important caveat ‘may Your will be done, O Lord.) It certainly doesn’t hurt to ask God to anoint the obvious athletic gifts granted to talented players (we all have our favorites) and then, isn’t it grand when they make a Good Play!?!

Yaaay God! (& Go Stteeeeelers!)

The thing is, we do so like our teams to win! After a victory years ago, Jimmy Johnson said, “you wake up on Monday morning & the world’s a better place because the Dallas Cowboys won the Super Bowl. How ’bout them Cowboys!”  For sure, we’ve felt that way when the Steelers won…but then, when they LOSE, like to the Packers in last year’s Super Bowl, the world does NOT seem a better place because the Packers won! : (

Did God not hear our prayers last year? (or a few weeks ago during that slug-it-out overtime loss to the Broncos?)

Hmmn, is there a Massive Accounting Machine up in the Heavenlies tabulating a Prayer Score to determine the Outcome?  (methinks NOT!)

Maybe (gasp!) who wins Football Games is not a Big Deal to God… maybe He’s more concerned with how the Game is played (if He was watching San Francisco play the Giants 2 weeks ago, lots of ruckus & punchy goings-on then!!)

Sometimes life is like a Football Game: occasionally with soaring Faith we make winning Touch Downs & feel GREAT, but sometimes we lose – fall, trip, mess up the pass – and lousily we crawl off the field (pout, grumble, we blew it!)

Or maybe opportunities are blocked by circumstances out of our control & when we try to catch the ball with all our heart-felt best efforts, we lose.

Or maybe we have to change the way we play (especially if tackled by Health Challenges, the loss of Loved Ones or Big Blitzes sacking us flat onto our tushis!)

When tackled by difficulties or blocked from opportunities, methinks faith is not about always ‘winning’ …

Methinks God wants us to keep playing…

“…But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God & not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed…”  (IICorinthians 4:7-9)

…  Need some Help? Check out the Heavenly Playbook & listen for those Still, Small Voice Playcalls (ask for that Forgiveness Call & you’ll hear ‘all clear’); have faith to pick up that dropped Football & get back in the Game..

Does God care who wins the Super Bowl?

I don’t know…

But I DO know, He cares about me & He cares about YOU…

…& He wants to see us in that Heavenly End Zone rejoicing because we kept playing the Game (with Grace, by Faith, through Mercy& Love in HIM!)

Now the Chili Chef must go tend her simmering pots for the Big Game tonight…

Grace, peace & Faith-ball

Virginia : )

p.s.  “…maybe Mr. Tarkenton is right and Jesus doesn’t care about the outcome of a game. But as Coach Lou Holtz once quipped, ‘His Mother does!’  Go Irish.”     Tim Connors   (The Wall Street Journal, Letters to the Editor -19 January 2012)
