Irish Remembrance…

Looking back there have been quite a few St. Patrick Day posts here @ Roses in the Rubble (St. Patrick’s Breastplate prayer, Nuns in the Fun, Irish blessings et all..)  But today while looking around, an Irish poem was found that comforted my heart.  Methinks it may comfort others, too, as we remember our loved ones…

Remembered Joy

Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free!
I follow the plan God laid for me.
I saw His face, I heard His call,
I took His hand and left it all…
I could not stay another day,
To love, to laugh, to work or play;
Tasks left undone must stay that way.
And if my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss…
Ah yes, these things I, too, shall miss.
My life’s been full, I’ve savored much:
Good times, good friends, a loved-one’s touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief –
Don’t shorten yours with undue grief.
Be not burdened with tears of sorrow,
Enjoy the sunshine of the morrow.

HaPpY HaPpY BIRTHDAY MAMA!!!

March 15th is my Mama’s birthday.  She would have turned 81 today…

Mama bday flowersI took this picture to send my uncle after he sent those gorgeous flowers for Mama’s 80th birthday (that’s him in the framed picture with my aunt.)  As I blogged last year about Mama’s birthday  (click here to read it) in 2014 we held Papa’s Memorial celebration on March 15th, so we didn’t really do anything for Mama’s 79th.

But last year? We pulled out all the stops!

Z shere mama trellisSince my brother was working on the actual day, my sister and I took Mama out for a lovely ladies lunch at a posh place on Duke of Gloucester Street.  Notice the chocolate dessert?  Mama loved chocolate so she was definitely feted with the good stuff! After lunch we had a grand time rolling Mama’s wheelchair all around Colonial Williamsburg…

Her 80th celebration lasted several weeks — outings with my brother Dwight, gatherings here & there, special times with the grandchildren, and then the big celebration with the whole family.  When the oven went out the day before (disrupting my grand culinary celebratory plans), we ended up taking Mama to a local favorite – Sal’s – where they let us bring in a Ukrops birthday cake.

They made over Mama something special… Italian singing! clapping!

Mamas 80th bday candles cake Sals…it was a night to remember!

Oh, how we remember.  Little did we know Mama would be gone in three short months.  We are grateful for all those special times celebrating the gift of her life.

“Hope does not disappoint because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts.”  (Romans 5:5)   Thank you, Mama, for pouring the love of God into our hearts in so many ways, for so many days. We love you! We miss you! We hope you’re having a grand time in the Heavenlies with Papa, Jesus & all the saints…

sigh.

… to leave you with a smile, here’s a bit more of Mama getting feted with the “good stuff” (CHOCOLATE!!!)   A favorite dessert of hers …

… a prayer for compassion…

It’s very late on this Lenten Monday, so here are two short verses for our minds and hearts to munch on …

“In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.”  Luke 1:78-79

Monument Valley SunsetO Lord, we need Your Light to guide this whacked out war weary world into the ways of peace.  May the light of Your Love brighten the dark corners of our hearts and minds with Your tender compassion, mercy and grace.  Empassion us with Your love, O God. Empower us with Your love.  May Your tender mercies dawn anew in our hearts each morning that we may be Your mercy, be Your peace, be your love… Rescue us, that we might rescue others, O Lord.   We ask this in the Name of Jesus, Amen.

…immortal flowers…

My Mama absolutely loved Amy Carmichael, a dedicated missionary to India from 1896 to 1951.  Mama treasured her many books, poems, and stories about her life.  Mama’s favorite Amy Carmichael book, Rose From Brier, was written during a time of painful convalescence that lasted many years.

While on silent retreat in November @ the Jesuit Center in Wernersville, I found this book on the shelf in the library.  Go figure!  A book from one of the most famous Protestant missionaries, but not only that — Mama’s favorite – in a Jesuit Catholic library!!

These words seemed to jump off the page, so here they are for you on this Lenten Sunday:

Before the winds that blow do cease,

Teach me to dwell within Thy calm:

Before the pain has passed in peace,

Give me, my God, to sing a psalm.

Let me not lose the chance to prove

The fullness of enabling love.

+++

Before I leave the desert land

For meadows of immortal flowers,

Lead me where streams at Thy command

Flow by the borders of the hours,

That when the thirsty come, I may

Show them the fountains in the way.

… still waters…

Papa loved Psalm 23.  On that last morning in the hospital with his body worn out from a septic UTI (Urinary Tract Infection), he suffered a heart attack. Struggling to breathe, agitated, it was hard to calm him down.

Then my sisters and I began reciting: “The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.  He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters…”  As we reached “still waters,” Papa’s contorted face relaxed like a wave of peace hit him.  His body calmed down. He had such a look of peace as the last few minutes of his life passed away.

Papa loved Psalm 23’s imagery of still waters.  There’s a beautiful stain glass window by the front door which names our home, “Still Waters.”  It’s not just peace God our Good Shepherd brings with still waters, but nourishment. The realities of sheep management dictate that they can’t drink from waters that aren’t still (so said Papa in one of his booklets. : )

Here’s an invitation today, to let the Good Shepherd lead us to still waters in the midst of our busy days, busy lives.  Maybe your children are crying, you’re running to the next thing, or you’re finding despair lurking in the corners of your heart — take a few minutes, listen, quiet your heart.  Allow God to lead you to still waters in your life…

Papa, Papa, Papa!!!

Papa grave march 8 2016Today is March 8th… a date that will not be easily forgotten by this red head.  Yes, it’s International Women’s Day, but more important to me — it’s the anniversary of my Papa’s passing two years ago on March 8, 2014.

Although I had visions of grandeur in writing an amazing blog about my amazing Papa, after driving 9 1/2 hours yesterday my back is pounding with pain (the excruciating kind) so this will have to be brief.

My brother and I visited our parents’ grave this morning.  We rejoice that they are together with Jesus in the Presence of Everlasting Love (& that their suffering is over) but we miss them. Lots. Lots and lots. Lots and lots and lots and LOTS!  There are huge holes in our hearts and lives … yet their love continues to live on in us.  We are blessed that the love of Jesus they shared with each other, and with us (& so many) lives on in us, too.

‘Cause that’s the thing about my dad.  When people walked in the door, they felt loved.  “How are you, really?” And, he really wanted to know.   He tended hearts for the Kingdom, planting seeds of love, the agape kind, and gently watched them grow.

Papa was not one for harsh judgement — he liked to get people into the Word of God, and see God at work, changing hearts, changing lives.

He called himself a “sweet little ‘ole brown-eyed pastor.”  You just had to watch it when he cut those brown eyes at you …he had a way of getting you to want to do things for God (& for him.)

Although he couldn’t move anything (even to wipe his nose) he had such gratitude. Not a day went by he didn’t thank us, profusely… and tell us how much he loved us.  (And, you should have heard what he said to Mama!  egads, the mush police ran out of ticket paper!!)

oh, Papa, we miss you!!!  (& Mama, too…)

P.S. These verses from Isaiah 40:27-31 are referenced on Papa’s grave – not just because he loved eagles, but as he became weaker & weaker, the spirit of God soared & did truly amazing things in & through him. (“I can’t but He can … and all that : )

“Why do you say, O Jacob, and complain, O Israel, ‘My way is hidden from the Lord; my cause is disregarded by my God?’ Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.  He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom.  He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.  Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Two Blessings (not just one!)

At the end of my 8-day silent retreat in November, Sister Maria McCoy asked me to pick a blessing from a bunch of folded papers in a bowl.  Putting my hand in, out came this first blessing … much to my amused spirit!  For over 20 years I have prayed almost every day for the gift of Holy Hilarity (much needed for relief & development workers, even more needed for worn out caregivers.)

“May the God of Laughter be with you, blessing you with the inner joy that calls you to chuckle at your own seriousness; and may your sense of humor lighten your heart and the hearts of those who share your journey.  May your laughter bubble over to others, causing them to smile and laugh.  May the healing God of laughter gently hold and bless you.”

After praying that blessing, Sister Maria asked me to have another go at the bowl (methinks she put this one near the top for me to ‘pick’…)

“May the God of Tenderness be with you, caressing you with love, gently drawing you into the tenderness of God’s own heart, mellowing you and gentling you as you allow God’s tenderness in you to unfold and blossom.  And may the experience of this tender love so transform you, that others become drawn to our God of love.  May the blessing of Tenderness be upon you.”

As a juggernaut, make-it-happen relief & development worker, one thing I learned through the care-giving gig with my parents — the “how” really matters.  Doing that love thing while mopping up poo (or pee), washing my Mama, or ‘turning’ my bed-fast quadriplegic Papa (which involved slinging him about) – how I did it truly mattered.  With love, for love, in love… + humor definitely helped!  Taking Mama through ‘the Beauty Shop’ (getting her showered & spiffy clean), Papa loved to hear us giggling.

How I thank God for the gentling of my spirit that made those times with Mama so very special.  Despite her crooked back & swollen knees, I know she felt beautiful as we sang hymns & shared joyful times together @ The Beauty Shop. (Not just hymns, we’d also sing, ‘rub a dub dub Mum’s in the tub!’)

So, two special blessings on this Lenten Wednesday: Holy Hilarity enlivened with the love of God… healing laughter & blossoming tenderness.

p.s. speaking of silent retreats, i’m zooming off to a silent retreat in South Carolina from Friday til Monday, so once again the Roses in the Rubble post-a-day Lent gig will be interrupted.  Hey, prayers welcome – it’s on an island beach @ an Anglican retreat center. Sounds kinda like a hardship hair-shirt place ( :

proclaiming Christ (quickie quote)

Dashing about after a wonderful getaway celebrating my brother’s birthday, so today’s Lenten post will be a bit short.  Short can be a good thing, especially when it packs a powerful punch for our minds and hearts to munch on.

“We must proclaim Christ by the way we talk, by the way we walk, the way we laugh, by our life, so that everyone will know that we belong to Him.

Proclaiming is not preaching; it is being.”    Mother Teresa

birthdays + getaways = birthday getaways

This weekend my brother & I are zooming out of town to celebrate his birthday.  Since Dwight is my YOUNGER BROTHER, his age shall not be divulged.  Let’s just say there are a few decades to celebrate.

LIFE IS A GIFT.  For Dwight it truly is given the fact he was born with a hole in his heart.  (Last year I blogged about it – you can click to read it here:  Birthdays, Birthdays.)

Since we are scrambling this evening to get ready for an early departure, here’s a quote from a favorite author to mind-munch:

“Birthdays are important. On our birthdays we celebrate being alive. We should never forget our birthdays or the birthdays of those who are close to us.  They remind us that what is important is not what we do or accomplish, not what we have or who we know, but that we are, here and now.  On birthdays let us be grateful for the gift of life.”  Henri Nouwen, Bread for the Journey

p.s. That’s my Mama’s precious hand in that picture taken last year on her 80th birthday. (Note the chocolate cake & chocolate ice cream — her kind of dessert!)  Oh, how we miss her!!

p.s.2.  There will be a brief hiatus of Lenten posts here @ Roses in the Rubble due to celebratory travel itineraries.  Normal Lenten posts shall resume on Tuesday, March 1st.  Have a blessed weekend!!
