20 February: World Day of Social Justice

Water Kenya

“As we mark World Day of Social Justice, we see far too many places where there are increasing opportunities for a few and only rising inequality for the many.

Growing inequality undermines the international community’s progress in lifting millions out of poverty and building a more just world.

The fault lines are visible in falling wages for women and young people and limited access to education, health services and decent jobs.”   Ban Ki-moon,  Secretary General of the United Nations

The U.N. set aside this World Day of Social Justice  to raise awareness of social justice issues around the globe – the need for gender equality, for minority rights, for indigenous peoples to thrive… for people of every race & creed (& tribe & gender & health status) to have possibilities & opportunities to live their lives without discrimination.

As we move through Lent, may God continue to expand our hearts with equal love & respect for the dignity of ALL people… & may we be galvanized to do what we can where we are to raise awareness, make opportunities & ‘do justice’ however possible  (by the grace of God!)

grace, peace & social justice

fortune cookie wisdom… (in Lent : )

chinese foodYesterday my brother treated for Chinese Food (it was a holiday here in the U.S. + he is sick with a sore throat & Other Miladies, hence the wonton soup was particularly appreciated & Papa gets Really Happy about Shrimp Lo Mein noodles!!)  We also enjoy opening our fortune cookies, but i must say, mine was one of the most contemplative – ever! i kept thinking about it. So, today  here’s some fortune cookie wisdom for our minds to munch on …

“Don’t find fault, find a remedy.”

We can take this on so many levels – for work, or with our families, or in relationships… we’re always nitpicking each other, or (if you’re too nice to nitpick out loud) sometimes our internal dialogues make mincemeat of Others We Are Aggravated with (Frustrated, Annoyed, ANGRY …) which is almost just-as-bad (‘judge not that ye be not judged’ & all that.)

Sometimes the remedy must be to look at ourselves – 1st – & then to look at others from a grace-filled-loving perspective (& maybe if we stopped focusing so much on the negative, we might actually see something positive? or the possibility of s.th. positive? Especially if we actually start thinking out of the box we’ve placed ourselves & others in…)

Then, there’s the work/ organizational application…  i remember in Tanzania, we used Appreciative Inquiry in our projects & as an organizational tool.  i, however, as a juggernaut tended to focus on WHAT NEEDED CHANGING, like when Other Divisions would really screw up  make mistakes with Big Proposals, i called our National Director, YAK YAK YAKKKKKETY YAK YAK screeching about The Problems.  He, however, as a walking AI practitioner would say, “yes Virginia, but what can we learn from these mistakes so we will get it right the next time?”   (& just for the record, we did get it right & more right & even incredibly right as Time Went On, by the Grace of God & lots of hard work! : )

One Saturday when transiting from Kagera through the rather HOT & dingy Mwanza airport to Dar, i was stuck from 7:30a.m. until 5:30 p.m. with a dead-battery laptop & Not Much Else. i called George To Complain, but he said, “Virginia, aren’t you glad the plane had operational challenges on the ground & not in the sky?”

hmmnn. Eventually (& also after George sent me to Ethiopia to ‘be certified’ in AI!) i did ‘get it’ & so grew my professional & personal toolkits For The Better … (hopefully! : )

A good thing to think about? applying this to how we ‘fault’ ourselves without letting the love of God in to remedy our hearts & minds & spirits with Healing Love…

Well, that’s enough fortune cookie wisdom for one day – (gotta go dash & reheat those noodles! + the Big Pot of Soup made for sickie brother..  : )

grace, peace & Fortune Cookies (!)

…prayer…

It’s Monday night (a little late), so here’s a very short Lenten Challenge quote to contemplate about PRAYER:

“Prayer is not talking God into things…

Prayer is learning how to receive, how to wait, listen, possess something…

Your desire to pray is God in your heart.

Pray for the desire to desire.”

Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM (The Price of Peoplehood)

i really like that last line – to pray for the desire TO desire.  That’s sort of part of my daily prayers  – when saying the ‘Our Father’  (may Your Will be done…) i always ask God to align my desires with His desires.  hmmn, maybe that needs new phrasing – that God will make His desires our desires…

grace, peace & DESIRES

p.s. wow.  From Passion to Desire-  methinks there must be a connection??

…more on passion (the Lenten kind!)

While listening to Andrea Bocelli yesterday, i began contemplating the concept of passion – not the throw-down-have-my-wicked-way-with-someone kind, but the kind that drives us to Action, pushes us to Care, opens our hearts to LOVE – especially the love of God (receiving & giving of…)

‘Com-passion’ is to suffer with, which implies deep feeling. When you boil it down, passion does involve FEELING(s) vs. apathy or dullness or ‘not caring.’ (You can actually hate someone or something passionately…)

It does make you think… you don’t have to Be Married (or in a relationship) to get into Passion grooves – to do our ‘enjoy life to the fullest’ bits, or to, like REALLY CARE about people, stuff, issues … & what we do all the time (to have a passion for it? to do it ‘passionately?’)

Maybe during Lent we need to ask God for a little More Passion. To make the dreary doldrums of our lives a bit more lively with LOVE (the Heavenly Kind) – to paint the inner bits of our beings with deeper colors…vibrant, not dull.

Not for wimps, that prayer… if you ask for “passion” & then think about it… yes, it’s nice to care a bit more, love more Apage-ish style, but then remember the Passion of Christ.  Not sure I want to go there, exactly, but if we’re passionate enough about something (issue, injustice, cause)  or someone(s) (our mates, family, loved ones, friends, people group) to completely sacrifice ourselves (by the grace of God)…

Hey, that’s Passion with a capital “P”…

Jesus did call us to ‘deny ourselves, take up our cross & follow Him!”

Daily.

But, maybe we’re feeling borderline apathetic (Apathy is a strong word, let’s re-phrase) – Too Tired To Care very much about much of anything.  Maybe our hearts are in deep freeze while our moldy minds & mildewed spirits struggle with the cold.

But Passion melts the ice & begins kindling moldy mildew …Asissi Blue crucifix (2)

… & there it is.  A few sparks. Then FIRE…

We see the Passion of Jesus with new eyes; His sacrifice is our Light.  As we trudge about known by His Love, passion flames our spirits into a brighter blaze for His Kingdom.

… & we Care … & we DO … & we LOVE…

…because (HE asks us to!)

grace, peace & passion

passione! PASSION! passione! PASSION! passione!~!

Dreary, damp & COLD outside (a few snow bursts between icy sleet downpours), but how lovely inside: sitting in a comfy chair all warm & cuddly in a soft flannel shirt, sipping hot tea, listening to ANDREA BOCELLI.

Wait, it gets better (!)  – Listening to Andrea Bocelli’s new CD ‘passione.’

sigh.

As Andrea croons his gorgeous tenor vocals in six languages, the words don’t seem to matter.  It’s all about beauty, love & PASSION – his passionate voice that truly warms the heart.

Andrea Bocelli passione…And the music on this one is just TERRIFIC. yes, I am a groupie & have almost every CD compilation he’s ever made.  But, have to confess that on most a song or two usually get ‘skipped’ (or bypassed for the iTouch Bocelli playlist!) Ok, so Amore & Sacred Arias usually get full plays, but this one is beyond terrific:  Every song is Amazingly Awesomely Andrea Bocelli at his Most Inspirational (& Romantic) BEST-EST EVER!

more sighs.

It’s hard to even pick a favorite song – I like them ALL. There are several amazing diva duets (Jennifer Lopez, Nelly Furtado, Edith Piaf – excerpts of her voice in a lovely rendition of “La Vie En Rose.”) Maybe my top favorite (so far) is “In Nostro Incontro” with trumpeter Chris Botti (who is also awesomely amazing on “When I Fall In Love” and the Bonus Track – “Smile.” –yes, I am also a huge Chris Botti groupie. My brother & i saw him in an unforgettable concert awhile back..)

Then there’s  “Senza Fine” to lift your spirits – and SO MUCH MORE.  With 20 songs this CD is really loaded …(methinks it’s a ‘deluxe edition’ – so worth the extra pennies, ok, maybe a few dollars more, but wow – LOTS OF GREAT MUSIC!)

…so, while icy sleet downpours dreariness outside, my heart is roaming the Italian countryside with side trips to sunny Spain & Portugal.  As this music transports my spirits, my toes are also tapping to a few definitely danceable numbers.

PASSION!  “passione” … PASSION!!

Reality strikes – gotta dash & finish our ‘passionate dinner’ – 4 bean chili, cheese quesadillas, guacamole & Brazilian Orange Cake for dessert(!)

Grace, peace & PASSIONE

ASH WEDNESDAY: fasting, ashes … & joy?

Virginia, the blogger, really debated about pulling this Lent-post-a-day gig again this year (seems like i’m always tired!) but here we are.  It’s Ash Wednesday (& your humble blogger has almost recovered from her chocolate hangover!  almost…)

Ashes.  Fasting. Giving up Stuff. Prayer.

The point being?  Lent is a journey that draws us closer to God within a disciplined framework (what we give up & what we do to make More Time for God) from now until Easter.

Sure, sure – we should do this stuff All Year Around (reading more – SPIRITUAL MINDSTUFF, worshiping more, praying more, fasting, helping our neighbors, sharing with those in need, being conduits for & of God’s Mercy etc.)  but Lent reminds us (just in case we forget a little…or busy ourselves with Other Stuff that squishes our God-time into minimal chats..)

water source (UGANDA)Unselfishness vs. Love    Today Msgr. Timothy challenged us with how we go about Lent (& Life) as ‘half-hearted people’ & miss the possibilities of Joy offered along the way.  Do we have to be dour faced & solemn &, well, joy-less during Lent?

Quoting a bit of C.S. Lewis from his “Weight of Glory” sermon, it’s true we often content ourselves with mud pies when delectable confections of joy are On The Lent Menu.

Reading my tattered copy back at home, here are a few excerpts for mind munching:

Regarding the ‘highest of virtues’ C.S. Lewis notes that most people today would claim “Unselfishness.”  But Christians of old “would have replied, Love.”

The negative ideal of Unselfishness carries with it the suggestion not primarily of securing good things for others, but of going without them ourselves, as if our abstinence and not their happiness was the important point…

…Our Lord finds our desires, not too strong, but too weak.  We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased…

waterfall cropped…We want something else which can hardly be put in to words – to be united with the beauty we see, to pass into it, to receive it into ourselves, to bathe in it, to become part of it…if we are reborn in Christ, the spirit in us lives directly on God…The whole man is to drink joy from the fountain of joy….

…Meanwhile the cross comes before the crown and tomorrow is a Monday morning…the load, or weight, or burden of my neighbor’s glory should be laid daily on my back…There are no ‘ordinary’ people…Next to the Blessed Sacrament itself, your neighbour is the holiest object presented to your senses.”  (C.S. Lewis, “The Weight of Glory”)

whew!

If you (like me) are trudging around SO VERY TIRED, maybe from lack of sleep or heart-tired from burdens too big to bear, try drinking a bit more from the Fountain of Joy.

Don’t confuse Joy with Happiness (click here to read More About That!) … & stop nibbling mud pies when you could be sipping Champagne from the Heavenly Realm (or, at least a Very Good Bordeaux!)

grace, peace & joyful Ashes

Virginia : )

p.s. i am trying very hard to focus on Joy, but this fasting business tends to morph low-blood-sugared-Virginia into a Grumpy Crab or a muddled puddle.  Prayers to be a mercy-filled-muddled-puddle but NO MUD PIES.

a mardi gras of CHOCOLATE ! CHOCOLATE! CHOCOLATE!

…and so it begins.  Wait! Not yet…

Italian hot chocolate

… one more sip of decadently delish dark chocolate…

So, for real, tomorrow is ASH WEDNESDAY.  Which means?  LENT BEGINS. Which means? NO MORE CHOCOLATE FOR 40 DAYS (if you, like me, give it up for Lent.) Maybe on Sundays you can technically sneak a taste, but usually I forgo chocolate the whole of Lent.

‘tis so very hard for a Chocoholic like me.  Today it feels a little like the Israelites in the wilderness trying to eat up all the manna (emptying out the chocolate stash hidey holes …& more as you will see…)

…back to drinking Hot Chocolate, but we’re not talking Nestle here! Oh no, this is good stuff – from the Chocolate Café in Lititz, PA.  Actual chocolate chunks melted into steamed milk.  The ooh-la-la make-your-heart-smile heavenly kind. My sis brought me not just one, but TWO CONTAINERS for Christmas.  Alas, the manna drive to finish them both off by today is off by a box (must leave the 2nd box all nicely wrapped up until Easter. Under lock & key, with the key custodian some place far away. Far, FAR AWAY!  :  )

…& there are were the Russell Stover Dark Chocolate Turtles.  Yep, if you like Turtles (the chocolate kind with caramel & pecans) & if you like Dark Chocolate(!)  Russell Stover now makes their famous turtles IN DARK CHOCOLATE. I discovered this at Christmas… & unfortunately (or fortunately as the case may be) I must pass the Russell Stover display on my way to the Pharmacy counter for my Papa’s meds, like at least once a week, or sometimes (like last week) THREE TIMES!   (The pharmacists & I are on 1st name basis— as Debbie noted last Tuesday, “but Virginia, you bought a box of these chocolates last week!” … a week? for a box of chocolates? Hmmn. Maybe for normal chocolates but that’s a Bit Long for a box like these Dark Chocolate Turtles to ‘hang around.’)

…And, of course, Valentines Day is THURSDAY. The DAY AFTER Ash Wednesday.   A sad state of affairs (not the mushy kind) for those of us who enjoy indulging in a chocolate (or two.) A fact duly noted & pre-celebrated yesterday with Mama (& a chocolate layer cake & tea in my pink china tea pot & dainty pink cups…)

…& last week, the Ghiradelli chocolate brownies Had To Be Baked – for Mama (!!)

This whole ‘manna-empty-out-the chocolate-stash’ drive has been pushed along for a week or two (the hilarious thing being several ‘replenishments’ during the emptying process.)  But then, today, Mardi Gras blues really hit.

Maybe we should back up a little, like what’s the big fuss?  Must be careful here as in Uni I wrote a 35 page paper for a grad seminar on Mardi Gras & German Fasching.  It seemed rather interesting at the time to compare how Germans & American ‘blew out’ during the rambunctious Carnival days before Lent… I seem to recall the Germans doing political satire while Americans did food (!!) … & both had riotous drinking & cavorting in common.

Actually, as a university student I thought God wanted us to have FUN – abundantly. All I needed was Suchard’s Swiss Chocolate (there was a supply at Macado’s on “The Corner” at my University.)   Out & about, folks would ask where I got ‘my stuff’ (the chocolate made an already hyper Virginia literally bounce off the walls!  : )

Now (many years later) I still enjoy getting out & about & having fun, but no more slam dancing. Alas, it’s too much for my battered knees.  (in my early 20’s I fractured my knee out dancing in D.C.  In the Emergency Room at 4:30a.m., I asked Roy Cook what was on his mind? He said, “I wonder if they could develop a serum so that when you hear the music, you remember the pain?!”)

So, no dancing today (maybe just a few bobbles around the kitchen) but this year for Mardi Gras i decided to really do it up — WITH CHOCOLATE.  Guess that might be obvious, but earlier today when the Mardi Gras blues hit, I made a quickie last-gasp dash to one of my most favorite places in Williamsburg:

MAD ABOUT CHOCOLATE.   (for those of you in Williamsburg not giving up chocolate for Lent, it’s located across the street from the Library downtown.)

ooh la laa – what they call their ‘brownie’ is a true delight.  Layers of moist cake-like brownie with chocolate ganache.  I usually eek out 3 servings from one ‘brownie’ but today, it’s MARDI GRAS.

(& it’s waiting on the table for the completion of this post.)

Gotta dash!

grace, peace & CHOCOLATE

Virginia  : )

HAPPY MARDI GRAS… !!!

p.s.  See you tomorrow (post Ashes) & the next day as we move into the Lent groove. Methinks Virginia, the blogger (after she recovers from her chocolate hangover) will try to do that Lenten Challenge post-a-day again. Like an inspirational quote, photo, reflection, book, movie (somehow managed to include ‘The Closer’ last year, go figure )…

You won’t be bored if you tune in…

A few weeks ago my brother & i zoomed up to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond to see the special Chihuly exhibit.  We had plotted this outing for awhile (& i must confess to Very High Expectations after viewing the videos of Dale Chihuly’s center in Seattle etc.) … but the actual exhibit far exceeded anything i imagined.

INCREDIBLE.
